How on earth does that thing make it up hills? That 4.0 has decent torque but not enough to haul that around very well.

No worse than the 4cly Toyota's back in the day. I kinda like it. Though I'd have used a 91 or newer... And lifted it. hahaha!

I kinda like that one! I'm sure it would get around, just not very fast or very economically. Jeep made a lot of the XJs in 2WD and 4WD back then. I dunno about a 1 ton chassis. Is that 4WD?

I don't think Comanche was ever a 1 ton frame. It kind of looks like it might be a dually so maybe its got a 1 ton axle.

The Comanche had more factory frame reinforcement than the XJ's and most had the rear D44 axle. And they did come in a "metric ton" package as stated here: MJ Comanche: 1987-1990 (some say up until 1992) MJ Comanches with the "Metric Ton" Package(long bed only) came with a Dana 44. It was also avaible as an option on short beds and long bed without the "Metric Ton" package.

Mom and Dad had one of these with a toyota 4cyl and an automatic during their retirement. They took that thing all across the US and into Canada with out ever a lick of trouble. I was astounded that with the 4cyl, it actually drove pretty well. Being that Mom was all of 4'11" (she used to declare she was just over 5', but we know the truth...:) this was a perfect motorhome set up for her, cause it was easy for her to get in and out.

Good memories.

These old rigs are very cool and capable.

The difference between now and then is that today buyers want trucks and campers that will win a drag race with the other POS in the next lane.

I'd love to get my hands on a camper like that. Mildly build it up, 265s, stroker... be ideal for me and the missus to tow the race car to events. Probably can't tow enough though regardless of what you did with it.
