OBS Tahoe Potential? expo-light

Hello folks,

I’ve been a lurker here for little and I’ve been contemplating how I should go about building my own Expo Vehicle. I have a few requirements that limit my choice in a number of ways. I’m probably going to need a vehicle that can tow 6000lbs and I want a SUV, and for my price range, I’ve been narrowing my choices down to ’96-’01 Tahoes or Yukons. Most likely the older ones with the 5.7 vortec, or “OBS”. The 5.3L NBS would be nice but would eat up any budget for upgrades, tires, and repairs Ideally it would be factory tow package optioned with 3.73’s, 241 manual tcase selector, and rear barn doors. I’d really prefer a ¾ ton type of vehicle but with my limitations the shorter, non-suburban 1500 looks like it will work. . I’ve searched a few times for tahoe/Yukon and I read a few of the members builds but would like to start my own post with some questions

As mentioned, I plan on towing a 2000lb trailer, 3100lb race car, and assorted spares & accessories about a half dozen times a year around 300-500 miles round trip. When not towing, the truck will double as a mild expedition vehicle to travel the back roads, mountain & forest roads etc for longer vacation trips. So what I’m looking for is input on the offroad, 4x4, & expedition capability this type of truck will be asked to do and what changes I should consider making to it.

As for build, it will be pretty limited:
-Mild lift, up to 2”
-285/75/16 or equivalent 17” - open to suggestions. Not too big, mpg concerns
-Extra BIG trans cooler (B&M stacked plate or similar 8x11”)
-3.73’s with G80, posi, or other locker. Hopefully I can get one w/ 3.73s already. 4.10’s maybe?
-Shift kit/tuning – I’m fully aware of the 4L60E weaknesses, hopefully I wont have to rebuild right away.
-Possible brake upgrade
-Rear air bags for assisting in loaded/towing scenarios
-14bolt Semi Floater swap, sometime down the road
-Tow hitch w/ weight distribution & anti sway, which I already have.
-Stowage and/or mounting for basic accessories: flash light, shovel or e-tool, heavy duty come-along (no winch), highlift jack, emergency & first aid kits, full size 285 spare, etc.
-Few extra off road lights
-I don’t plan to add heavy duty bumpers at this point

- Will the 241/243 be strong enough to wheel reliably in these trucks? Do they break easily or maybe do they generally need a rebuild or overhaul before 175K miles

- I haven’t read too many complaints about the IFS 4x4, anything to look out for or worry about as far as strength or reliability is concerned? how badly are these travel limited even with sway bars disconnected?

- Suspension lift. When researching the possible tire sizes most of the folks (non expo types) seem to be happy with cranking up the torsen bars, adding spacers in the back and just driving around on big tires. However, I hear it can increase ride harshness, accelerate front end components & tire wear, and most importantly reduce the actual available travel & working distance of the suspension. I have browsed superlift & skyjacker. They both offer a 2-2.5” lift kit which includes upper control arms & what appears to be a mild diff drop. It looks like a 1.5-2” lift will work well for me for the tire selection
Super lift example
Skyjacker example
For expedition purposes & wanting a 4x4 that performs, are these IFS trucks w/ drop-type lift kits a good idea? Do they function well especially when considering the cheap torsen-cranking methods? Can you get respectable articulation for this rig to where it could be considered ‘capable’?
I'm not interested in rock crawling, or mud bogging. I want to get out and go places and not be hindered by a weak vehicle.

I have a ¾ ton 454 th400 2wd suburban now, so I know I’m giving up some going to an IFS 4x4 ½ ton. I’d prefer to find a clean ’91 solid axle 3/4ton 4x4 suburban w/ barn doors….

Thanks,
Morgan

And there lies your answer.

As for the Tahoe, you can ditch that torsion bar for some coil overs, will ride like a Caddy offroad. It isn't cheap though!

I used a Z71 with a Vortec 5.7 to tow a 2000lb trailer, and about 3600lbs of car, tools, chairs cooler etc.

Never had a problem.

My one issue I had, is that if I kept it, it would have been REALLY nice to swap in 4.10's with the stock 265 tires. To tow in OD I would have to drive 70mph. Or drive 60 in D. I had to do this to keep from shifting in and out of OD.

For the majority of those miles towing, I used OD. And with my trailer/car/truck combo got GREAT mileage towing (on flat land)

There other thing I would do is convert the rear to disk brakes.

Mind you this is my experience over the course of a couple years, and thousands of towing miles with an SCCA car on an open trailer on flat land.

Nice find there RR1! That is an epic cool suspension for the NBS...if I ever win the lotto I know where a few $K will go.

Morgan~ I think you would do find with either an OBS or NBS rig, my vote would be for a Suburban 3/4 ton since they have the better suspension components. If I could do it all over again, that is what I would have bought.

That said, I have been perfectly happy with my 2002 Tahoe and it has served me well for 5 years now.

I'm also interested in a full size build. KLAKEBRONCO, Did you ever take the Z71 Tahoe up north? How'd it hold up in the winter?

I think coilover conversion is jusssttt a tad outside my budget.
Ideally I would build a 6BT 3/4ton suburban square nose w/ solid axle. But that is outside of my space & time constraints. a tahoe with SAS & 14FF would real cool too, based on the ones I've seen on the web, but again not in the scope of this project. Maybe someday when I get to build myself a real shop. so untill then it will be the more mild trails/routes.

basically I'm downsizing. I'd like a 3/4 ton suburban 4x4 but the wifey will NOT drive one of those. heck, she protests the current one sitting in front of the house now. Not that it will be a primary vehicle for either one of us but sometimes the back up vehicle needs to accomodate both folks. Its also the my perceived slight improvement on back roads/trails manuverability of the tahoe vs the longer, and slightly heavier suburban.
I don't tow as much as I used to, so downsizing isn't that bad i guess. I can make the tahoe/yukon work for that purpose w/ well chosen upgrades (WD, sway, air bags). The routes within Texas to the various race tracks aren't mountainous so I don't have to deal with the terrain some have to. My current trailer already has dual axle brakes so that helps with the whoa.

before I spend the coin I want to evaluate my decision vs how capabable and reliable the vehicle will be for the mixed used intentions. I tend to keep vehicles for a while.

This user name looks like someone I used to see on FRRAX.com.

Is the 3100lb race car an F-body?

I used the truck up north, (I'm from MI) and it was originally sold in MI so it was there it's entire life.

The cab corners (ext cab) were bubbling up when I traded it for a Duramax. Seems pretty hard to keep rust at bay up here. Also seems it's getting worse. I sometimes wonder if they are using something other than salt on the roads.

Sorry I meant up north as in northern part of the state (northern lower pennisula or the UP). Used to live in Howell (north of Ann Arbor, east of Lansing) and the roads were rough to say the least and I remember the further north we went the worse they got. I was wondering how the 4WD did in the snow and in the spring when the potholes, mud, etc. would take over the roads before the 1st grading.

I think I have something you may drool over...Its a diesel tahoe 2door. 1997. Plenty of power and the heavy duty 4L80E transmission that they use in the one ton came standard. its in the for sale section right now! I am slightly negotiable, but its a great trail rig as its turning radius is amazing and its not very long. Mine has the G80 3.73 Posi rear, barn doors, and its beefier than a gasser as far as drivetrain. GVW is 6450, has a roof rack for your add ons, trans, and oil coolers,Take a look at it. Heres the link so you dont have to search around. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46524

if not mine, this seems like the right vehicle for you. It seems to meet nearly all your needs.

Honestly, where I was is probably worse than northern MI. Up north it gets so cold they don't use as much salt, and the freezing/thawing/freezing is what tears up the roads.
With that said, it was the best vehicle I've EVER owned in inclement weather. Ice and snow covered roads it did great, the ride was beyond anything you would expect from a truck.

I never offroaded with the truck and it only gave me one problem in 70,000 miles. That was a heater hose fitting on the intake manifold. It's a common problem on those trucks apparently. (I didn't buy it until it had 71,000 miles on it 140 something when I traded it)

Awhile back I looked at 2500 454 vortec Suburbans and honestly, if you drive them right, you aren't going to get much worse mileage than with the 5.7
I saw plenty mention they were getting 15-16mpg with them.
And a Black Bear tune will only help.

The nice thing about the 3/4 ton trucks is the upgrade in the front end parts. The old school trucks you can easily just swap out the live axle. With these, unless you do convert the front to a live axle, the 1/2-3/4 swap is going to be a major hassle. (I don't know of anyone who has done it)

You could possibly upgrade the weak front diff to the one the Hummer H3 Alpha uses. It's an iron case unit and is supposedly much stronger. But I'm sure it's expensive too.

The IFS will give up TONS of wheel travel even with no swaybar.

I would look at swapping a D60 front, 4L80e and 241 case into the current truck and keep it. Or, keep searching for the 91. There should be plenty that are rust free down there by you.

BTW I'm ESPCamaro over there. Just don't come around much since the F-body is gone, the BMW is gone, and I'm not doing anything autox oriented anymore.

thanks for the links. a 2door is out even if 8lug sas conversion. traveling to MI is out too, i'll look down here for something with zero rust. I used to live further up north in MO and I'll never have a rust belt car again!
been surfing CL, called around to a few different vehicles. non that seem to suit me yet....
