oem steel wheel question

Sirs,

I just had some Toyota oem steel wheels, acquired by my local tire shop, mounted to the truck. My only concern is the the front wheels. They have only taken approximately half the thread of the lug nuts. The guy at the tire shop said the reason is the the front hub bolts don't stick out as much due to the design of the front hub. The rear wheels fit perfectly. The wheels are 16X7 16 hole black steelies. He assured me it was safe (6 to 7 full turns on the nut) but it just doesn't seem right to me. I planned on replacing the hub bolts with longer ones to get them fully threaded, but if the wheels are in fact Toyota wheels, this shouldn't be necessary should it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

No sir, those are not factory lug nuts. The guy at the tire shop said the factory lugs that came with the stock aluminum wheels don't work well with the steel wheels.

I believe that's correct, my steelies take different lugs than the alloys. You may want to see if you can get 1 OEM lugnut from the dealership for comparison's sake. Or perhaps Tire Rack.

The factory steel wheel lug nuts have a tapered seat and will sit down inside the wheel more. The ones for aluminum wheels have a flat seat. You definitely need to change those out as they may not stay tight very long since they don't have the proper seat.

Already taken care of, see below:

To the OP, I have Toyota FJ Cruiser factory steel rims on my '09 Tacoma, and I don't have the issue you do with the front lugs. I also have aftermarket open style conical lug nuts, and the wheel studs stick out past the nut. Your situation is perplexing.

ya i realize that acorn nuts are different than the alum. wheel shank style lug nuts, i was just wondering if maybe the nuts that u have are just longer than the factory ones for steel. i wouldnt really be worried as there are alot of threads are in the nut

Never mind; I just realized your Tacoma is a previous generation to mine. I assumed it was a more recent model.

I dunno fellas. It just seems fishy to me. If they are in fact "Toyota" wheels they ought to fit without issue. Maybe the tire shop gave me the wrong wheel?

I had that issues with my tacoma and the wheeler's black steelies, but with the accorn style lug nuts I still got 8-10 spin's on them which is more than enough. You could swap out for some rear studs if you want.

I don't think the problem is with the nuts or the length of the lugs. I would bet that the lugs are ~1.25" long. That should allow the nuts to fully spin on and have some sticking out.

I'm thinking that the wheel is not sliding over the hub, allowing the wheel to seat against the rotor. I think it is riding high on the hub and pressured on with the nuts. I think the hub is longer than the little shown in the picture.

DON'T DRIVE IT!!!

Is your spare on a steelie? I would swap it out and see how it sits.

If I'm right, get 4 new wheels. They should all be the same.

As long as the wheel is tight to the face of the disc and you can get 8-10 turns out of the nut that should be enough to hold it tight, but if you are still weary of it just get the longer rear studs and pound those in and call it a day... I looked at some of my old pics of the Tacoma and I filled the accorn nut about 3/4 of the way, kind of looks like you have less but I also had the different style nuts that didn't have that extra lip. Mine were just a nut and the end was tappered down.
