off road trailer

I'll start off like many others and say this is a great site and so far I've hours poring over pictures and reading. Now , I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee lifted 6.5 " with 35 " tires and have decided on building my own off road capable trailer. First a brief explanation then 2 questions. The trailer will be 5 1/2 feet wide by 6 1/2 to 7 feet long not including the tongue. It will be 4 1/2 to 5 feet high running the same 35 tires and rims as my Jeep. The final height will be determined by a look at the jeep and best guesstimate method, so basically when folded down it has the same or within 6 inches height of the jeeps roof line. For the pop up part I will use that lifting lid style seen on many threads with a hinge on 1 end and 2 hard tri angle sides and a hinged end piece. I figure that will give me around 6 feet of standing room at the one end so it should be enough. Now I also want to design a slide out piece on 1 side that will be approx 5 feet wide and from just over the wheel wells to just below the roof line. It will be on the passenger side and if it is 2 1/2 feet deep inside it should give the wife and I around 7 feet of sleeping space. The frame will be 3/4" light weight tubing welded together with either 1/4" plwood or light gauge steel outside with foam inside and 1/4 "plywood interior. The wife camps 3 season with me but I like to winter camp also so it must be insulated. Here,s the 2 questions - Where do you go to buy those hurricane hinges and Does anyone have any thoughts and or pictures on a system for the slide out mechanism. I have come up with a C channel brkt using bearings but with so many people here someone may have a better idea. I leave with 3 pictures of my prev set up a 84 CJ7 and a small trailer on 35,s I built.

The 1st is a summer pic, the 2nd a winter camping with a friend pulling the trailer and the 3rd is the new tow vehicle.

Welcome to the Portal! For your hurricane style hinges check out Lil' Bear Tag-Alongs. Grant is excelent to deal with and his products and customer survice are top notch.

About the slide out, have you considered a tilt or fold out instead? Do you have any drawings or sketches of what you have in mind?

Can't wait to see what you come up with. I love seeing the unique ideas that the members here bring to life.

Hello Hugh.Nice rig you have out there.
Seems like we're on the same boat somehow. It's only that i don't care about winter camping so i'll skip the insu to save some weight.
A few rules of a thumb you might consider(tho i see you have previous experience on trailers).
-Tongue weight 10-20% of total trailer weight
-Axle placement in a 60/40 maner(of trailer frame length).
-Hitch-axle hub length=Your xj's wheelbase to give same turning radius(But using an Xj as atow rig the total combo will be to long giving hars time on tight trails.
By the way is the Xj tow rated at 3500lbs?
And i'm curious how you will take care of the sliding problem. If there is not much weight you can use BIG drawer sliders as carpenters use sometimes and then use a support bracket or something to ellim the vertical forces...

At one time I was planning almost the exact same build to pull behind a Cherokee, but I ended up going another direction. My plan was to use the bed slides and lift mechanism from a pop up for the slide out and roof lift. I even considered doing a small production run. Keep us updated if you proceed with the camper, I'm very interested.

The Cherokee is rated for 5000lbs towing although I hope to keep it much lighter say around 1000 or so. My friend told me that MAC tools have drawer sliders rated for 500 lbs so that is 1 possibility, another is a unit called a leveller glide used for cabinets and office furniture I found at a local store. I will post up pictures but it is 39 below zero here now so the computer is the only thing getting a workout. Actually it is in the planning stages, I am retired with a part time job at a local Home Depot so first earn a bit more cash then source a trailer. A co worker has an old fibreglass boler style trailer he will let go for cheap so that may donate a frame, windows and some misc parts. However it is under a pile snow so it will have to wait for a bit. Thanks for the input. That cargo bed looks like a very good potential solution.
