Well, you got me wondering how sturdy my lid is, so I went out and stood on it. I'm 225 lbs. and it didn't move at all. I even bounced up and down a little bit. It seems plenty sturdy!

That has me thinking that unless they serve another purpose, the 2nd row of horizontal frame rails and vertical supports on your lid probably isn't all that necessary. You might could do without and save yourself the added weight, or like I suggested earlier, use that metal up top to support the sheet metal. Again, I'm no engineer, so make your own decisions. I'm only making observations based on how my lid turned out.

ETA.....keep looking until you find a sheet metal fabricator that can make the bends for you. Piecing all that together would be a ton of welding and unless you are a good welder, it will be a ton of grinding and filling too. Even if you have to drive a good distance to the fabricator, it's time better spent...IMO.

wow... pretty cool. now this gives me confidence... i will build the frame following your design then.. if i feel its not going to support after my test by mounting the rtt and couple of people inside i can always add the inner frame later.. thanks dude for the test and observation..

yes i am going to find the metal fabricator.

Hey, do you mind sharing how much you spent for bending the sheet metal for the lid? I found one 30 miles away from my home and he is quoting $70. Not sure if it is ball park range. Btw, this is in seattle, wa.

$70 for the bends and the metal? That sounds way cheap if it includes the metal.

I paid $275 for 14g sheet metal and the bends. The two end caps cost me $44 for the metal and the cuts.

ETA....your lid looks great so far :)

$70 just for the bends. I am getting a quote from another fab guy today.

Realized just having a basic tools won't help much and also some decent work shop will also work. So been busy gathering tools and redoing my garage as a proper work shop last winter and now its all set up for the project to resume. here are the few pics of my garage workshop that i setup and some tools that i gathered ..

Went from this sate of garage to....

Do you see the trailer hidden behind the piles :)..

Adding more outlets.. and 20 amp circuits.. for some reason i always run out of power outlets :)

Finished garage..

I did not like the round fenders that i was extending to fit the bigger tires. so ended up fabricating M416 style fenders..

Next is the swing gate.. used the sheet metal from the old swing gate it self to maintain the style but did fabricate a new frame to get the recessed style.. and with some bullet hinges.... i haven't made decision on the locks and holding chain yet.

Next is to extend the tongue so that i can fit in a nose box for battery setups and also for better handling.. I saw this design in other members design and i just implemented it. Just don't want to reinvent the wheel when there is a design already exists :)

Mocking up using the conduits..

frame extension and first cross member... another cross member will be added later near the end of the tub..

Nose all clamped and ready to tack them... The main tongue that runs in the middle is removable.. because i want them to be removed when stored in garage to get back some space..

Quickly added a rolling jack to the nose so that i can move the trailer around easily.. I will decide the permanent location and design later..
