Oil Cooler Hose Question (Feed or Return)

Hard to tell from your photos, is it the line or the fitting? These use banjo bolts and 2 compression gaskets. Could be its just a loose bolt, need to replace the gaskets in that case. I ordered the gaskets from McMaster. Couple $7 something for a 5 pack. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-washers/=xqol5g

No the oil is leaking up from the top and running down to the banjo bolt. In the below pic I either need part number #11 or #12 .... but i don't know which one i need. Is there a sure shot way to tell one from another? I will try to take better pic tomorrow and post

What year Montero are you working on?

The pressure fitting was leaking on one of the oil cooler lines in my 2002, but I ended up replacing both.
The 3.5L in the NM Montero has the banjo bolt for the oil return hose "on top" or above the feed hose banjo bolt.
If you have access to the FSM try to pull up a diagram like the one linked below.

As others have stated it looks like your line is leaking from the banjo bolts (replacement washers may be ordered from the below site).
I ordered OEM parts and spent a bit more.

From what I can discern, and in all likelihood, it's the pressure/feed line (12). Definitely looks like oil coming from the crimp fitting. Keep in mind the washers (9) at the banjo bolt should be replaced as well. Also, depending on the fitting, you may need to teflon tape the feed line at the feed pipe connection (6).

Sorry should have provided the suv model first, It's a 2000 Montero Endeavor.

I'm very sure it's not the banjo bolt (although i wish). I'm saying this because I can see oil running down the hose from up and dropping on floor when reaching the banjo bolt.... so from pic it looks like the banjo bolt is leaking. Also if it helps to know, it helps to know, it only leaks when the engine is running..... but i'm guessing that is when the pressure builds up and so it starts to leak.

I have taken some more clear pic to show the location of the hose.

Here's the top view from hood - air filter removed and the two oil cooler lines, it's the bottom one

looks like the top hose in the diagram as oriented to the oil filter. Feed hose. The new hoses don't come with the washers, so you will need 2 of those for each line. Pair of hoses are a bit over $150 shipped if I recall correctly.

The most recent photos make it look like the crimp fitting is leaking.
If that is the case, replace the hose (I did both when it happened to my rig) and be sure to order the new washers.

Hey, just curious if you ever solved this and if so, what was the real culprit?
I have a '98 that has a very similar issue. It appears that my leak is coming from the fitting.

At that price point, it might be worth taking them off and going to a hydraulic shop and have some made for you. From what I hear NAPA and other auto parts stores also make them, but are usually pricier that a local hydraulic shop. Good luck and report back.

Thanks for the response. So, did you disconnect at the oil filter and at the point where there is a nut between the "rubber" portion and the tubing? Or, is it more complicated? I have seen videos on other vehicles where you have to replace everything between the filter and the cooler. (which doesn't seem to be necessary on Monteros. It's crazy how similar our photos are.

I just replaced both of my hoses and bought them through the dealer. Both hoses and new copper washers were $155. The hydraulic shop local to me wanted $65 a hose and wanted to reuse parts of my fittings (screw that), though slightly cheaper, not worth the money. I have over 240k miles on the engine in my truck so $155 for another 240k miles is cheap.

So replace both hoses and washers (oem) and call it a day.
