Yes, the hose clamp with a cable is out there. I'm just as much a skeptic about "they sell things because they can" until someone suffers a specific issue. A loose filter never happens, ok. Do engines self destruct when there is no oil circulating in them?

We all carry a jack and spare tire, some Offroaders have TWO on their trailers. At $250 a tire, $125 a wheel, plus mounts, we're talking over $800. I just spent less than $8 to keep oil in the motor.

There's nothing wrong with what you are doing. We all decide what defenses we are going to add to prevent damage to our wallets. It's just in 60+ years of wrenching on race cars and off-road this problem has never come up.

This problem interested me so I did some checking:
There was a problem with the early F20C engines (in S2000) that caused the oil filter to loosen. Honda solved this by adding two metal contact rings to their filter to prevent loosening (after market filter don't have these features). And spec'd 29Nm (~16ft.lb.) torque or 7/8 turn on filter after contact.

Now the 3.5 has this stupid cartridge filter that’s buried up under the front bash plate and requires a special tool to remove. It’s not the worst I’ve seen, but I don’t love it.

The bash plate on my Tundra is a right PITA to get on and off all by itself. Inspired me to get a real skid with an access door, along with the special tools to get to the filter.

Yeah that’s on the short list of mods the truck needs! I haven’t looked but I assume someone makes one for the taco too. What brand did you go with?

I agree. I do not worry about oil filters per se but I'm not above geeking out on whatever uncommon preference I have on maintaining my cars. I think you should do what works for you. If I could make a suggestion to, well, everyone, it's to change your own oil. Why?

This ^^^^. Engines are expensive. The employee, good or bad, at the quickie oil change place doesn't buy mine, I do. I consider it a pretty simple task, even simpler on any lifted vehicle (read any overland vehicle) to roll under there and do my own. Takes 10 minutes. This gives you a chance to actually stay familiar with your vehicle, have the confidence that you did the job right, look around for other problems and save money too!

I love it when people argue 'convenience' for having their oil changed. Let's see. Earned vacation time off, planned trip, prepared vehicle, food, shelter, stops, activies, etc., traveling with family in bad weather (hot, cold, wet, otherwise0, had quickie oil place change oil for 'convenience'. Oil plug/filter let loose on the highway 100 miles from nowhere. Ruined trip, no more vehicle to live in, explore in, travel in, wife/partner, pets, kids and you NOT happy. Pain in the ass confrontation/litigation/lost time/stress etc. dealing with quickie oil change place.

Sounds convenient.

I do realize that I've gone off on a major tangent from simply securing an oil filter to blaming others for doing a lousy job changing your oil but this is how it starts, imho, and definitely how it ends.

Here's a solution (perhaps to a non-existent problem).

Sneak one of them on and your service guy will give you all sorts of new names...

As for safety wire, no, I don't think cross drilling the filter and safety wiring it will work out well for me. ; )

@86scotty reference was to aircraft, so no drilling required.


With a little effort, I bet a crossed reference aircraft filter could be used in an automotive applicate if loosening was a concern.

RCI aluminum... but after I bought it, I read that some of them had issues with poor welding of the supports or something. Maybe another "made during covid" thing.

Way back in 1991, my '84 Toyota PU blew a oil pressure sender, and all the oil drained out. I had the radio on loud and was offroad, and it took awhile for the clattering to get my attention. Put almost another 200k hard miles on it after that... after fixing it of course!

I think it's pretty insane that for a long time we've had alarms that go off when your seatbelt isn't fastened, but if something happens that is killing your engine... a little light comes on... 🤪
