OIL LEAK

i have a 1997 montero ls and it leaking oil quite badly. it smokes white from the exhaust only when i give it alot of gas from a stop. i see oil on the rear of the alternator and on the bottom of the headers. when i get under the car and look i see oil everywhere i dont know what it could be i need help.... please thanks.

best thing to do would be take and spray down the motor and get it really clean then start searching for the oil leak, but your problems could be worse than just a oil leak if your getting white smoke out the tail pipe there is a good chance you've got a blown head gasket(s) white smoke = burning coolant, blue smoke = oil

What LT said. In my experience for a rig with those symptoms, I've seen oil coming from the front cam seals &/or the valve covers.

My 2000 has the same, oil leaking down the rear of the alternator. It looks like the valve cover gasket is leaking. I'll be changing mine this weekend. Look for the highest point you can see oil.

Mine was doing the same as yours and also burning up alternators because of the oil getting into them. I change the valve cover gasket and that didn't stop it. I change the cam seals and that fixed the problem.

So change both to be sure you fix the problem.

While changing the timing belt today I found my leak was the cam seal and not the valve cover. Replaced the seals. Hopefully that fixed it.
