On The Fence

Ok, I have been going back and forth on which vehicle to purchase for the following use; DD, weekend adventure machine (medium trails, family camping trips and the occasional Moab trip). My requirements for the most part are 7 passenger, capable off road and looking to put at least 100K additional miles on the vehicle. I'm looking to purchase a vehicle under 25K. So my dilemma is what to purchase, LC100, LR3 or Lexus GX. My mind says LC100 but my heart says LR3.

So while searching the ads I came across this posting http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...&mmt=[ROV[LR3[]][]]&listingId=364194319&Log=0

Is this worth purchasing and what should I check on a LR3 before purchasing a LR3. BTW I plan on purchasing the diagnostic system with the vehicle.

I've also read nwoods Things to look out for in a used LR3.

Please search as this question is asked every week. There are only about 50 threads comparing the LR3 to Toyotas.

Same in the Toyota section.

Isn't the GX a Lexusized 4-Runner? If so, seems the smart money is on the 4-Runner (w/appropriate traction options) over the GX.

Drive them. Drive them again. You can read about capabilities and reliability. You can read about aftermarket availability. Sometimes, just getting in and feeling the differences speaks louder. It did for me.

I would search as well, there are tons of threads on this. There is a long thread in the LC forum right no comparing the LC and the LR3 (and a sequoia but I don't know why). There isn't much to say other than what has been said already in that thread from Rover and Toyota guys alike.

Yes, I've read most of the threads in the forum and considered all the pros and cons. I think at this point it down to how much risk and I willing to take, little risk with a LC 100 but somewhat mundane or take more risk and have fun with a lR3. That's as long as it in running. At least that's what the majority of the forum posts I've read over the last two years suggests.

Thank you all for your feedback.

After having been active on numerous land rover forums for many years and currently owning 3 of them, I believe well over 50% of what you read in terms of reliability issues and complaints about repairs are due to lack of education and people buying a vehicle without doing homework then looking for someone else to take responsibility for their poor choice. I wouldn't let your decision be based on just what you read on forums. Get out and talk to people who really own and use the vehicles.

Day after day all these forums are clogged with people making a first post about how terrible "vheicle x" is because they just went and paid 13,000 for it from joes used car lot with 95,000 miles, had no one inspect it, had no maintenance records, an now it needs 3k worth of work from a dealer.

All are good options. LC100 is most likely the best Land Cruiser out there. LR3 is also a great vehicle, excellent off road with good road manners as well.

Personally, my vote is the LR3. You said it yourself, your heart says LR3. My heart had been telling me Disco for years, but my head led me to a Pathfinder. Don't get me wrong, my Pathfinder was a great rig: reliable and went everywhere I pointed it. But it was like driving a washing machine, it just didn't speak to me, so after it sat around for a couple months without being driven I sold it and bought a Disco.

I'd concur with this. Also worth noting that forums, by and large, focus on fixing issues so there is a propensity to think that vehicles have tremendous issues or what have you.

I have owned, and own, Toyotas as well as Rovers. I loved my Tacoma(s) and my wife loves hers-but the Rovers we have had just have so much more soul, not to mention community character.

Just wait ten years and you will be able to buy a brand new LR3, built by Toyota with a full factory warranty!

As Toyota follows its corporate mantra of "The second mouse always gets the cheese" this is what they have always done. Allow others to develop and risk their reputation on new technology then copy it once the bugs are all worked out.

Wake me up if they ever come up with a new idea on their own that they would risk putting into production before anyone else. Not going to hold my breath.

Sitting on a fence makes your butt sore. Buy an LR3 already.
