Think about it. . . Everything you've said here only proves how great Rovers are. People still love them! Look at the car world. Reliability isn't everything by any stretch. In fact, I would dare say that a majority of the really interesting and exciting cars ever produced had lackluster reliability, but people still lust after them. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, to name only a few.

And for all that, I can say that in the time I have owned Rovers, only twice was I stranded beside the road, and both times it was a fuel pump or fuel pump wiring problem.

I will agree most brand centric people (jeep and cruiser dweebs included) are pretty annoying but, hate come on.

You are totally correct jeep stuff is the best. If anybody has read any of the JP magazine issues, when John Cappa was the editor and chief. You would realize that jeeps are crap too! Every issue was slamming some jeep or critical part of a jeep.
I don't get it . All of these 4x4 vehicles need help!.

Also, apples are delicious.

even Scot creator of expedition portal and his love and politics towards Toyota land cruiser couldn't help him to admit jeep took over the market as one of the best 4x4s on the market

So you buy a Rover cheap and fix it, or spend five times more on a Land Cruiser with 200,000 plus miles and still have to fix it. . .

I like JK's, but they are quite expensive for what you get after all, and I like the way Rovers drive and their general character much more than a JK.

This is one of the main reasons I switched over to Rover's. I used to run with the Jeep crowd who wouldn't head out of town without their Jeep on a trailer so if they broke something they could make it back.

David

You were just running with the wrong bunch of guys!

My local club, made up mostly of Jeeps, but any SWB is welcome, is a ''Streetable' club. We drive our rigs everywhere we wheel, whether it's touring around the mountain passes in CO, or 10 days out in Moab, we drive. Only trailers we have are M416's!

:coffeedrink:

The camel trophy was only run by a HEEP once..then they switched to a real mans truck...nuff said..

And the very first Rover was built on which chassis??? LOL

I'm a Jeep nut, but still plan on getting a D90 someday!

I had a 1994 2 door Cherokee 5 speed once. Drove that thing until 2002. Took me everywhere I wanted to go and never let me down. That was my 5th Jeep (CJ5, CJ7, CJ7, Wrangler Sahara). Then I bounced around. I have tried LC's (they are cool enough). Now I am into Rovers and have been for some time. Truth be told all of them have their achilles heel. Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance.

I drive LR's because they speak to me.

I love my D90, buy one, you won't look back.
I love my Series, buy one, you won't look back.
I love my Blue 1995 Classic LWB, buy one, you won't look back.
I love my Green 1995 Classic LWB, buy one, you won't look back.

Nothing wrong with the CJ's that the Camel Trophy first used. They are great off road vehicles. I owned one and still have a place in my heart for them. But, they fail at carrying the gear necessary for an extended trip, and that's why Camel Trophy switched to LR's in my view.

Again, that's a reason why I switched. I wanted a vehicle that could go where my CJ could go, but still carry gear and kids in comfort on highways to get to the off road parts. I have also owned three XJ's and liked those too, but they are really too cramped also. The JK is a possibility, but as stated, I think they are too expensive for what they are and their chassis design places the drivetrain low down for road stability, and that exposes the long wheelbase rig's underbelly unless you put much larger tires on.

Defenders, Range Rovers and Discoveries have the drivetrain tucked up into the chassis more and that is superior in my book. They are just really well thought out off road trucks. Stock long arm coil suspension, gear driven transfer cases, 3.3:1 low range gearing, full floating axles front and rear, full time 4WD with locking center diff, just to name some of the advantages over most Jeeps.

I believe you hit on the head.

Affording to repair....

Land Rover dealerships( suuuuck). When I was a young man, with my freshly rebuilt series II on the road. With several years and ASE certifications under my belt.I applied for a position at dealer. Homeboy couldn't see that hiring an enthusiast of the brand, would probably help in the quality of repairs. I tried a couple more times to no avail. I wandered around the shop and noticed the sheer lack of interest of the technicians had in their job. Hmmm
Ask any brand mechanic , they USUALLY hate the brand of car they work on.
Maybe hiring me would have been a good idea??
I digress.
Hearing about all of the over priced repairs that customer get convinced to perform by the commission-pay based writers. I can understand why people have had crumby experiences with their LR. (This is not unique to LR)

Consequently many would be mechanics attempt to make repairs with "interweb" advice and limited tool selection. I'm not knocking anybody at all. If you don't do a particular job day in day out you may not have the skill set and mastery of techniques. Not to mention the knowledge of chemicals and parts.
I'm not going to do research on the web about logging and expect to be good at it, the first day on the job. Logging is not that complex, cars are.
I have learned the hard way,as most will but I used to repair cars for a living.
A novice person with no coworkers to consult has a steep learning curve.
It is my belief that this is the bane of rover ownership. As there are precious few rover or general repair shops that do what they say they will.
This is why as a kid I decided to become a mechanic after paying too much for a repair.

Didn't this guy just want to move some parts, jeez.

I'm confused. What's not to like about newer Defenders?

Love these my dad can whip your dad threads. 4 Rovers, over 1 million kilometers, 4 tows, so 1 tow ever 1/4 million kilometers. Not too bad. Two of the three were water pumps one at high mileage, my fault for not swapping it out as preventive maintenance, one defective brand new (in the truck less than two weeks). One a starter and as the D1 was a 5 speed, I could have jump started it to get to the garage but that's what CAA is for. The final was an EAS fault on my P38.
