Looking at 2 units. The yaesu ft-7900r vs the icom Id-880h. I like the small face of the icom which will make it easy to mount. Both have great reviews on eham. Any opinions?

Nothing wrong with either of them (or Kenwood either). Some of us become partial to a brand for various reasons (common programming cables, menus, etc), but all the major brands are solid. Go with the one that best matches your requirements. I'd certainly consider the ICOM for the D-Star at least, but it's quite a bit more than a FT-7900. Having the option of digital voice would be cool but probably not necessary unless you're going to do more in the hobby than just off highway stuff.

yea most people just kinda stick with the brand of their first radio. Ive always been a yaesu guy just happened out that way. Both are great brands.

I love my 7900, nice simple interface.

With the 880H, you're paying more for the D-Star capability. I'm looking at that radio too, but only because it has D-Star. We have a local D-Star repeater. If I didn't care about D-Star, I'd probably spend the money on a dual band-dual receive radio, or save money and get the 7900. Both Icom and Yaesu make high quality radios, although some get better reviews than others. This is an excellent site for radio opinions and reviews: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/8280

I went with the ft7800 and have 2 mounted in my truck for about 5 years. I've always had a preference with Yaesu. I have the 2 control heads remote mounted in the centre console and the main unit mounted in the back of the suburban. Never had issue with audio, buttons or dials which are solid compared to other mobiles rigs.
