OT: Who is building their rig in case of a Doomsday scenario?

Good thread, and Martinjmpr wins post of the thread for ensuring that common sense reigns. That's another thing I like about this place compared to most other corners of the web.

At any rate, I'll just say I bought (today! haven't even started my big thread about it yet) an old mechanically injected diesel 4x4 quad-cab truck for a reason. CME and EMP events, while highly rare, are still a factual threat and obviously proven multiple times in recent history (unlike zombies- a great subject to discredit yourself with in my book). While my modern Suburban will probably start and run just fine after a nearby nuke attack, why chance it? There are too many factors and unknowns in EM propagation (I've read the same stuff you guys have- also look at your geological properties, Quebec sits on a granite shield, not deep clay), so I just went old school and was done with it. That and societal breakdown (indeed in stages) are my main concerns, if I'm thinking worst-case scenario. I'll be able to load up my family (wife, 2 small boys, possibly the MIL), and with a slide-in camper, comfortably live for a few days at least if not weeks (re: typically recreational camping in good times, travelling) away from home with our bug-out provisions. Ultimately, I plan to 'bug-in' as I've spent far more fortifying my castle than planning to get away from it, as we all should who aren't in a flood or fire or hurricane zone. But if SHTF and the MRAPs roll in, I'll be using my 450mi. range + auxiliary fuel cans and heading to my folks' ranch well away from here once we're comfortable giving up our fortress as an all-perils total loss for insurance, if that still exists, and bonus if so. All that said, the odds of that happening are nill, for me... but as a family man, I tend to think at various levels of contingencies. Not too many years ago pre-kiddos, those contingencies more closely involved, "what clubs are close-by this loft downtown we could buy"? F that now.

Anyway, day-to-day, this is my new Home Depot run truck. :)

Prison systems are very cultural and animalistic. If you've watched animals fighting for control and territory, its pretty much the same. Who will be in charge, who will be feared, who will follow, and who will be killed.

People who have been in prison for a while know this food chain. Its easy for them to figure out their roll each time their in and out. Sometimes they are the big dog. Sometimes they are the little dog. Nobody wants to be the little dog, and so they fight to be close to the top. Loyalty pays rewards, and questioning actions are not allowed.

In our babied and pampered society, people protest about selective service- Just the mere fact of signing up is, "against their rights"- . Trying to get a band of people together who still believes they have rights is near impossible.

This is why everyone talks about bugging out and living in their own little nest.

There is really only one competing group that can go against inmates- and thats people who have been in the service, or at least some sort of para military organization. Their used to taking grunt orders, and to do things they don't like.

But anyways.. back to vehicles. If its an EMP, Im not driving anywhere. There's no place to go, and the streets will be filled with stalled cars. I will admit, at one point it did interest me, but now..

Just remember all your fancy LED lights use electronics too. :) Hope you have some candles.

After watching the car get stuck on a pile of dead bodies on last nights episode of The Walking Dead, I guess Subzila is gear toward the bug out/ prepper style. However as some have noted it can be a bullet magnet, unless you live in the south and everybody drives big lifted vehicles, so I am lucky I can have the sleeper Zombie Apocylpse end of the world Suburban and it will mostly blend in with my Redneck Brethrens vehicles.

Yeah, in some places the fully-tricked bug-out vehicle blends right in. I remember the first time my wife drove our old 40-series into an outback town after driving it in the city, "Finally I fit in" she said.

get stuck on a pile of dead bodies
I haven't seen that, would snow chains have helped :)

I don't know how many times this thread has been revived
It's a bit like the undead themselves, you can't kill it with a stick. But I too am happy for it to continue, it's very entertaining.

From the get go, I never had any intention of building my truck to be a TEOTWAWKI vehicle. If I did then I certainly wouldn't have picked a modern truck with 15 computers in it that run everything from the engine to the windows. I figure that either my truck will make it through a large scale EMP or SME just fine, or it won't and then at least I don't have to make the payments any more.

Fact: Those of you who are counting on your vehicle still working will be in an interesting scenario if indeed your plan succeeds. You will be the only one on the road with a working vehicle which will make you target #1 for EVERYONE else who is now stranded on the side of the road. Good luck getting through that without a platoon of Marines to escort you.

If I was building a vehicle for TEOWAWKI then it would be something I would have stashed away somewhere that I could egress to on foot and retrieve. Even then I would only travel at night with the lights off (and night vision goggles) to avoid drawing any unwanted attention. That might get me and my family to my bug out location in one piece. Or I could buy an old Russian tank. Hmmm.............

How did I miss this thread???

A few of my own thoughts:

We (friends and family) have an emergency meet & greet schedule. Regardless of the situation, if there is a SHTF situation, we know to try and meet at X place on X day of the month. Around these parts (Portland, Oregon) the major issue would be earthquake/volcano (well, and zombies). With all the rivers, bridges would be gone - there's no point in trying to force an early meeting time - you're on your own to start, make it if you can.

For those of you in North America, a water filter helps, but why not just drink the water? If it's THAT much of an emergency, a little stomach ache and squirts won't hurt you. And you will build up a tolerance for giardia, and in NA there are no viruses in the water (generally). Water filters are great for backpacking, but if I am trying to fend for my family with whatever I can carry, a water filter is low on the list (and I'd go w/iodine tablets anyways, they are in my BOB).

If you are serious about being ready in a natural disaster/zombie apocalypse, get a HAM and make sure anyone you care about has one. Communication is essential to forming groups and it allows you to get in touch over distance (using a repeater).

And my final thought, if you're near one, steal a big boat. Plenty of fuel to keep you moving, generally solid radio communications, you can anchor away from people (and not use power), you can fish from your bug out vehicle, and you can get to way more places than you can with a car.

I'm wrapping my Ford 5.4L ECM with left over exhaust insulation/PCV heater bags. They're woven metal like stuff. Then putting some tin foil over my body controller.

Many ECMS are a 3 sided metal box, the board slides in, then they fill it with potting material epoxy. You only have one side to shield. But even without that shield, it would take one heck of a direct EMP blast to reach components inside a metal car. I'm pretty sure the Military EMP shielding isn't anything you can't rig yourself. Many aircraft and ships have to shield their own electronics from their own electronics.

THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT. How am I going to explain this weirdness to my mechanic.
