Our "new" Turbo Toy

We just bought this truck from a co-worker. He was the second owner and the original owner also works with me.

1986 Hilux 4x4 Extra cab, 22R-TE, Fully loaded, PW, PDL, Air, Rear Defrost, Cruise, Tilt, Automatic, Moon Roof.

253516 miles on the truck.

Fully documented life back to the receipt of the original sale.
All valve adjustments, preventative maintenance and oil changes have been early or on time throughout. Even log books recording all fuel mileage and weekly tire pressure checks from 54 miles on.

The big pluses that I see are:

Engine rebuilt at 168920/ 4-1-98 (84596 miles/ 11 years ago)
New Turbo and exhaust manifold at 208019/9-7-01 (45497 miles/8 years ago)
New Radiator at 220620 /11-11-03 (32896 miles/5.5 years ago)

According to the logs, after the turbo replacement, it has used < 1/2 a quart of oil between changes.

It drives great and according to the reading on the Banks turbo gauge, it maxes out at 6-7 psi of boost. All services have been at Toyota dealers with only Toyota parts.

There are no leaks that I see except a little weep from the valve cover. All the fluids look as clean as the rest of the truck. (A reflection on the service history)

It also includes a camper shell that isn't in the pictures, but is color matched and is only a few years old.

This is mostly to be used as a training vehicle for our twin daughters as they approach 16. I'm also looking for a Subaru or another Toyota or other car or truck with a standard so I can teach them how to drive a stick or, I do have a good lead on a R151 tranny to swap in to this.

Here are a few pics:

The truck has only ever lived in SoCal and Arizona, so there is ZERO rust.

Let me know what you think,

great find, I had a 86 but sold it after someone stole it right out of my driveway. there was no damage and all they did was burn all the fuel out of it. they must have used a master key set or something. those older Toyotas are way too easy to steal!
also had someone try to steal the cat off it.........actually found a socket and ratchet hanging off one of the cat bolts. had all the bolts welded so the bolts would have to be cut off.
mine had over 286k miles on it, did not leak or use any oil. I think it was the original 22R engine and 4 spd. trans in it.

WINNER!!! Looks like a real nice truck.

I know you want the girls to learn to drive a stick but...If there are no problems with the Automatic transmission, why not leave it alone untill there are?

Becuase there is something inherently wrong with ALL auto's IMO. Mainly they're mossing a pedal adn you can't shift them when you want to ;)

Seriously, older Toyota Auto's are not that great adn realy do suck the life out of any engine they're behind... THe R151 5spd that came behind the Turbo's is quite a tough little tranny though if not hard to find. A 5spd swap would really make that motor come alive.

Oh yeah GREAT find. I look forward to seeing what you do with this rig. The RTE is a fun little motor for sure.

Cheers

Nice find! You just don't see many turbo's, it's also surprising to have a complete history. Well done!

Very cool. I have been looking in all of the usual places for a nice, clean turbo xtra cab to use as a dd. Congrats.

There's been a red one on TTORA for months, its in Texas, still has VA plates, not quite as clean as this one but nice nonetheless with lots of recent maintenance done & manual trans for $3800 http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124062&highlight=turbo

And another that just popped up a week or so ago in MI for $2100, manual as well http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=133624&highlight=turbo

END HI-JACK :victory:

When you're done with it send it down here, I will knock the front bumper off and find a solid axle to weld on. Looks like a great little truck, I may have to stop by and see it some time, when I can have a beer. Depending when I sell the ATV and which route I decided to take, I may have you shop for another Toy for me, you seem to do well.

If you haven't done so or thought about it yet, do yourself a favor and swap out the head bolts. These RET's stretch the stock bolts and loose head gaskets. Mine just did that. I'm going to step up to the ARP head studs. I wish that they offered bolts, but I talked to their tech folks and they don't make a bolt of the right size and length.

Is there a stud kit or do you have to buy specific ones?
