Out-of-round or bent EC Wheels

I bought five 16 X 8 forged alloy wheels from EC about 1.5 years ago. I mounted 315/75R16 Cooper ST/Maxx. From the get go I was never satisfied with the balancing. I posed my problems here on ExPortal. We could never get the wheels to balance. The closest we got to a non-vibration ride was when we had balancing beads put in in New Foundland. Even then, it was only better- not a fix. Lots of opinions here and people I know- told that it might be a lot of reasons- mostly blaming the Coopers or the bad tire jockeys.

Just had some BF Goodrich TA KO2 installed. While spin balancing the tires, the tech and I noticed that three of the wheels had a hump to them. Two were easily noticeable and one of them looked extreme. No one there could tell if it was a bent wheel or out of round. They didn’t have the equipment.

I have an appointment on Tuesday to have the wheels looked at by a shop that says that it can fix bent, but not out-of-round. Found another shop that claims that they can do both. Both say no degradation to the wheels.

My question is: with a forged alloy wheel, does reshaping of any sort weaken the wheel? My truck weight is 5460 lbs on the front axle and 6740 lbs on the rear. So not to max, but any loss of gross weight would be bad.

Should it be determined that your wheels are in fact out of round or bent, the first thing that I would be doing is contacting EC.
The minute that you make any modification/adjustment to the rims, any warranty claim that you may have will likely be gone.

If that shop has spin balancing equipment, it would take only a minute to gauge that wheel and figure out what the real issue is. I agree with going to EC first before fiddling with them.

I'd be curious to see how that other shop can do a reset on a forged aluminum wheel. Spun aluminum, sure....but forged?

I had the wheels looked at on Tuesday. What they found was that two of my three bad wheels had what they called "center hub bend". They said that could have been from the manufacturing or from not tightening the wheel properly. The third has a definate hump that could only have happened in manufacturing. They said that there was nothing that could be done to fix them.

That sucks - I didn't think it was possible to fix bent center hubs. I had that happen to one of my ATW wheels when I was having my lug-nut problems. Wasn't due to any sort of a manufacturing issue.
