Regarding going out there in February or march...Dude! That will be cold as ice and windy. You better be really prepared. I'm only assuming the ferry still runs then.

I am headed down with a rented teardrop over Thanksgiving weekend. I hope it isn't too cold. I had to reserve a campsite at the National Park. It looks like there aren't any primitive ocean side campgrounds (no surprise).

Does anyone have any advice on what a nature freak should do for three days along the Hatteras coast?

Frisco campground. It seemed to have the most privacy. Is that a good spot?

You mean Frisco Woods? That is a private campground on Hatteras Island (Which is a protected National Seashore, but off the beach, its just a small town) The beach access roads are very close.

But it is nice, especially this time of year (less people) With tent camping there, you have the ability to get away from the cabins they have for rent there.

Portsmouth is way more primitive, requires a ferry to get there, and you would need to bring most of your supplies.

The campground is definitely in the park. I reserved my campsite on recreation.gov.

different than portsmouth. Portsmouth is almost completely primitive. When you get off the ferry there are a few cabins and a ranger cabin. There is one shower facility. Once you drive through that, you are on the beach and there is nothing else out there the entire island.

no, but I was considering getting one.
