Overland Journal AT Tire Test

Earlier this year Overland Journal completed and published an extensive and detailed test of the leading AT tires on the market. Months in the making, it consumed a full week of time for a full team of testers and facilitators. You won't find a more comprehensive evaluation of AT tires anywhere.

Just one more reason to always check the Expedition Portal home page. We feature some great content.

A nicely written and thorough testing of various tires. I would like to see some a similar test done on the very aggressive ATs to mild MT tire range as well. To me, this would include the BFG KM2 and GY Kevlar MTR.

Plus, I'm sure we will all appreciate a follow up test with the new BFG KO2 when you can get your hands on one. Especially where it ranks with the ones you already tested.

Very well done article, I too would love to see an aggressive AT test, duratrac, st maxx etc.

New here, Great Article, would love to see how all these tires match up in the snow. I currently have the Duratracs and they are great, however I am looking for something a little less aggressive and am deciding between the Toyo AT2's and the Cooper AT3's. Would love to know which ones do better in Winter driving conditions. I live in Pittsburgh, PA so we do not get to much snow, but we get enough.

thanks.

Pretty good at some stuff
I have to concur with the article. My Falken Rocky Mountains (the Discount Tire only version of the Wild Peak) have been close to flawless on my R51 Pathfinder V8. They're quiet on road, do well in both dirt and gravel, and are decent in snow. I had mine silo'ed, which has been helpful on ice as well.

I too would have gone with the Coopers, but there wasn't one available that fit the 18" wheel and close wheel tubs of the Pathfinder. I could have gone to a 17" wheel, but doing so still wouldn't have changed my equation and 16" wheels won't clear the V8's larger brakes.

Good article, that's the kind of content I like to have access to when making decisions on a large purchase like a set of tires. I just put a set of Cooper AT3s on my wife's Mariner and will get to have some first hand experience with them in snow conditions this winter before having to decide what goes on my Frontier in the spring. I agree that it would be nice to have a similar test done on the aggressive ATs and maybe include the new BFG TA/KO2 with those.

Ditto.
It was a test of tires that most of us wouldn't consider in conditions that many of us aren't worried about...
In the East, we have street and we have slop. Not really any in-between..

This is a great article, but I agree with Hilldweller and java that it would have been nice to have some more aggressive ATs in the mix since it doesn't hit any of the tires I am considering. Using the "tried and true" BFG AT/KO (old version) as the baseline is great since so many people have used them.

The tires I would like to see, and have seen discussed here the most recently, are the new BFG KO2 (since the old one probably won't be around too much longer), Cooper ST Maxx, Goodyear Duratrac. I would also like to see the Toyo R/T, but they are VERY size limited (17"+ sizes only), so less important; with the popularity of their MTs, the R/Ts are worth a look when they get more sizes available.

That new Toyo does look interesting, doesn't it?
And add the Goodyear MTR/K while you're at it.

Isn't the MTR/K a true mud terrain? If that can of worms gets opened it is a whole new ball game, so I was avoiding them.
Not by a longshot. I think the Fun Country was the first mainstream hybrid and the MTR/K was the second. It does look tough though.
