New York Times take on the ideal compact camera:

1. Small enough for a pants pocket.
2. A big sensor.
3. Interchangeable lenses.
4. Simple, well-laid out controls.
5. Full manual controls.
6. Canned scene modes for beginners.
7. Superfast start-up.
8. No shutter lag (the annoying delay after you press the button).
9. No blur in low light.
10. An eyepiece viewfinder.
11. Huge screen.
12. Image stabilization.
13. Face recognition for perfect portraits.
14. The ability to take RAW photos (a format beloved by photographers because it lets them, in effect, change camera settings after the fact, using Photoshop).
15. Excellent burst mode — say, 5 shots a second.
16. Wide-angle lens.
17. Superzoom lens.
18. Customizable buttons.
19. Hi-def video capture.
20. Low price.

Clay,
Are you referring to the P&S's that look like little SLR's, such as the Canon SX1 IS, mentioned above?

yessir, like? dislike?

i am in the market and have been doing ALOT of reading and comparing trying to decide what to get. they are appealing on a few levels but i dont know, i really think i want to go dslr. i typically take care of my stuff and keep it for a long time so i want to make the right decision.

They definitely have their place. I do like many of thier functions, but they feel petite. With the big zoom, they are definitely not dust proof. As the lens extends out, air moves into the camera, to fill the void. This air will certainly bring dust in with it. The problem is, you can not get in there and clean the sensor or anything else.

If you have a budget limit, that will usually narrow down the cameras/lenses from which to make your final selection.

If I couldn't have an DSLR, I would get one of the micro 4/3's cameras, such as the Panasonic GF-1. But; I do have a DSLR, so I added a Canon G11 for a P&S.

Since you keep your gear for a long time, if you go with a DSLR, spend the big money on the lenses. Buy a used body (mid level), and plug in your good lenses. In a few years, you may have a better idea about what body you want, or you are happy with what you already have.

good point about dust in the compact, i figured it was pretty well sealed.

so, i really like many features of the sony dslr's and as such am leaning to the A550, but canon and nikon have such good reps that i prolly cant go wrong with either a rebel T1I or D5000. its really hard to make these decisions, i get so into it that i just walk away from the store empty handed.:(

i should also mention that i am fascinated with tilt-shift.

Since this is the Expedition P&S thread, I won't follow up on the DSLR discussion.

Send me a PM or pose a question in a DSLR thread and post a link to it here, for those that want to follow the discussion over there.:)

I recommend you find a camera store that will give more hands on demos, has a good reputation and an array of brands and products. Make sure you can exchange the camera if you do not like it. A good store will work with you to get you the best solution. You may even try renting different slrs first before shelling out the bucks when you get serious.
