Overland Utility Trailer Build

Cool!

I started working on a Utili-trailer I picked up a few months ago too. Originally it needed to be able to carry a BMW Adventure bike, but things have changed and now it will be for camping only. Mine was built using the whole back half of a dodge 2500hd truck. I took it all apart and ditched the 9.25 Axle that was still under there and put a 7200# trailer axle with brakes, tows nice. I have been wanting to strip the paint off and never thought to use paint stripper, my brain went straight to blasting, and I didn't feel like doing that, but seeing your results with stripper I think I may go that route.

Thanks for sharing your build!

How did it do??

Well, I got back last week from about 10 days exploring Utah, Colorado and New Mexico (with ample time in Texas on the road, haha). Anyway, I didnt end up taking the trailer with me - it was just not finished and I didnt have time with work/life/etc to get it in the condition I wanted. Yeah, it would have made it, but I also bought a great Tacoma that's pretty outfitted (HERE) and it served me well. Did a few trails in Moab like 'Fins and Things' but I am not really into the crawling stuff. Spent a few nights there, then drove over Kebler Pass to Crested Butte. Was with friends for about 4 days - fishing, etc. and then finished up the trip in Taos. About 2600 miles total - great trip and saw some great country.

Anyway, I worked on the electrical recently. Mounted up everything on the board and started to run some wires. Here's what's included:

- Battery switch in case I want to run dual batteries.
- Shore charger
- Solar charge controller
- Inverter
- Fuze Box
- Switches.

Next up will be figuring out how I want to mount the tent/awning. What I have right now it just too tall to be practical - too much drag, etc.

I think I need a bigger truck!
Nice Taco.

Wiring closet looks clean, for now...until all those wires get installed! lol Nice work on finding and buying that rig.

If you could have narrowed the rolling top and slightly reduced the width of the body you would be weight ahead, the bodies are a great idea, lots of storage and greater access to the jeep and land cruiser style. Good uch with the remainder of the build.

...and I'm back with some updates finally!

Been a while since I posted on this thread. Life, well, you know...

Anyway, since the last update I have been working on a few other things including finding the 'perfect' tow rig. I originally had a 2010 4Runner, then a 100 series, now a Tacoma...and it's looking like that will get traded for a diesel F350. Blasphemy! you say...well, first off, say what you want, but as I tested each of the set ups, I find myself really wanting a camper. RTTs and all that are great for long weekends, etc. But much longer than that and I want to have some heat not have to set up a stove/etc. Yeah, maybe I am a lightweight.

...ohh, and add to that, towing this trailer loaded it not that fun with a V6 Tacoma. Yeah, it can do it, but it doesnt like it and the MPG drops like a rock.

Back to the trailer.

So, most of the update is to the rack for the RTT and awning as well as some electrical. Here are some pictures:

Above you can see the layout with most everything out. The slide out that can fit a fridge or cooler up top. The awning (have walls and netting if needed), the RTT, etc.

Closer view of the galley. The double slide out works well for a cutting board, is just about table height and opens for storage.

Rear swing out - basically took some parts for a jeep swing out and made it work for the trailer. Gas/water can storage, spare and the hi-lift (although with the corner jacks on all 4 corners...you almost wouldnt need it, haha). Got the LED reverse and brake lights done, License plate light done as well as some marker lights: three red on the back and a yellow on each side, which really helps for reversing at night to see if the trailer is getting out of line, etc. Oh yeah....I had an old trasharoo for this thing too...until one of the straps just plain ripped off when getting it installed - dry rot I guess.

Not too much new here - wiring panel. Most of the wires are all run behind the panel to keep things clean. Have a dual battery charger, inverter, solar charger, fuse box and a switch panel for lights, water pump, etc. The other battery, if needed, can sit in the small box on the other side of the trailer - gotta run wires for that.

Here you can see the pass through box up front. But, what you should check out is the 110v charger input installed where the gas neck used to be! Might put some sliders on this side as well, but for right now my storage boxes fit perfectly.

Here is a look at the front set up: room for 3 jerry cans if wanted, large tongue box for random things (including the break-away box). You can see the storage mounts for the 4 leveling jacks covered with some brown paint until the final coats of paint go on. The water heater can hang on those hooks when needed - leaving it close to the gas and water lines it needs.

Here is a look at the hot water heater area. Doesnt have the gas line attached, but you get the idea. You can also see the water line from the main water tank just below it. Water line runs to a 12v pump.

And let there be light! Got some LED work lights mounted on all 4 corners. Can swivel them to wherever needed.

Well, that's it for now. Here is the final punch list:

- Get LED light strips mounted in the cabinets. Already run the power...but not looking forward to some tedious soldering.
- Run wires for the second battery location - charger and power lines.
- going to lower the awning height a few inches to make it easier to get in the garage - slight rubbing right now unless you are very careful.
- paint paint paint.
- few more things I am sure I am forgetting, but you get the idea.

Great build. That kitchen is nice Even if you go with a diesel camper, I suspect the RTT will get used by friends and family.

Ahh so your the one who purchased the Nemo Taco! Would love to have that rig. Shame to hear your getting rid of it so quickly.

Just read your build, some great mods to the trailer. Sounds like the diesel would be better suited towing it like you said

Yeah, it's been a great rig but after a few trips I now know I would like to have a camper on the truck - and that would pretty much rule out towing anything with the tacoma. The good news is that the truck will be staying in the expo community and will be in some really capable hands. There are plans to convert it to a solid front axle and add a blower...so it should be even more beastly!

Yeah, I bet that will be the case. I am sure I will tow this trailer with the new set up and be able to use it as a 'home base' if I want o cook outside. Plus I can store all my bikes easily rather than fumbling with them in a roof rack, etc.
