just have to add my 2 cents here as far as taking the fur kids camping and offroading. For the most part our dog stay right with those whom we are camping except the occasional wandering off to go potty or getting into trouble while there exploring. As long as we give them plenty of room in the van it seems like the kids in the dogs need potty breaks about the same time. as you can see from the picture are dogs aren't picky at all where they sleep but they do prefer the air mattress intent to sleep with our daughter at night.

Thread revival for sure but I've been looking for more tips recently. We have a 60# lab mix and 30# terrier. They both love getting out and we love bringing them. Sometimes it prevents us from doing local tours and such and was wondering what others did, if anything.

Interested also. We just did a trip to the ocean and had to forgo a lot of activities because of having a dog.

Wasn't very warm and we could have left her in the truck for a while. But apparently vandalizing people's vehicles in the name of saving dogs from heat is all the rage these days and I didn't want to risk it. Guess you just have to accept that trip dynamics change when you get a dog.

It is kind of funny that with so much coast line so little of it is dog friendly.

There are quite a few animal people out there looking for trouble when it comes to leaving dog in the car.I ran into one on the hood canal last week.Stopped at IGA in Hoodsport to grab something to grill.Parked in the shade on a 70 degree day with an air conditioned cab.The truck was running with the air going.Went into the store picked out dinner and sent the wife back out to the truck while I paid,She gets out there and a lady is standing next to the truck glaring at her.The lady started to chastise her.I come out and the local sherif is rolling in.We were not five minutes in that store,probably three.Sheriff asks me if it is my truck and dogs.I answer and he shakes his head and says I am going to have to do something about that lady and drives off.This is the second time an activist has tried this with me and the second time I have seen law enforcement expres frustration with the activist.All my dogs are rescue and one of them was taken away for being cooked at a indian casino.Mentally damaged.lots tried to adopt it but came running back saying no way.Finally I kept it.pisses me off to be accused of animal abuse by this kill a baby save a dog crowd,

At least she didn't go breaking all your windows. That's always my concern.
The beach itself has no dog restrictions. But we couldn't go wander through any of the touristy stores in town.

New dog owner here. We got Frankie a 20lb chiuahua something mix about six months ago. I wouldnt hesitiate to do a roadtrip with him but I was wondering what people do at state parks. It looks like dogs are allowed at campsites but not on hiking trails? What am I to do with the dog in the mean time, kennel him in the tent or truck? I'd be afraid it would be too uncomfortable for him or that someone would steal him(he's adorable).

What to do where dogs aren't welcome?

We travel with 3 dogs. For us, if the hounds are not welcome, we go somewhere else. There is so many places to see and camp that have no restrictions, why not go see them?

In addition, many "Parks" do not allow domestic animals to be left unattended in a vehicle or at a camp site - ie Yosemite.

Traveling with dogs can be a challenge, but a good one.

People not taking proper care of their animals is a huge pet peeve of mine.
If my dog isn't allowed I don't go.
I do have to make concessions and sometimes I can't do what my friends do because I have a dog but it doesn't really bother me. I just find something else to do in the meantime...luckily for me my friends who don't own dogs are very understanding and accommodating
If I can park in the shade, and it will stay shady and the air temp isn't too hot, I will go in for a sit down lunch with friends but if I can't get her out of the sun then I either look for another place to eat that has shade or I go to a drive thu.
If you decide to take your dog with you you are responsible for their comfort and life so take it as seriously as a child (OK almost, I wouldn't leave a kid in the car if I went into a store or restaurant...I think you know what I am trying to say).
Luckily my vacations/travels are away from where people tend to congregate so I don't have many issues.
I take my dog because I love to have her along and let her experience the things I do and it is never the same on the very rare occasion she doesn't get to go.
You just have to adjust your life around your dog and it seems like you consider that...I am glad you do many don't and the dogs suffer...They are pack animals and like to be included in your life..you are their pack.

Having our pups with us 24/7 is just another reason to avoid most established camp grounds (that list is getting long)

We tend to stick to national forest.
