Paper or plastic, or something else?

Add one of these to your camping kit. Half gallon pump sprayer. You can wash a day's worth of dishes on a quarter gallon of water with it. A full timing friend of mine taught me this and since I added it to the camper I use it for everything. Works great for handwashing too and you'll use a tenth of what you would at a tap.

I'm a little thrown by the comments about metal plates\bowls stealing heat from food. How long does your food spend on the plate before you eat it? My stainless steel bowl full of freshly boiled ramen has never cooled down fast enough, let alone too fast...

That's a great idea! I use something similar (bug sprayer) for showering, but this is nice and compact.

me I like styrofoam or plastic plates and silverware because they are fun to burn in the fire and watch them melt and the toxic fumes are are good at getting you high. They also seem to sail further when you throw them like a frisbie into the lake where you can shoot at them until they sink....

I must be doing something wrong..I don't think I have ever had food on a plate long enough to get the heat sucked out of it lol. come to think of it most of the time when we are camping we don't use plates or silverware we act like heathens and cook with a stick and eat with our bare hands............

I think we could possibly be related. You are reminding me of lots and lots of family reunions from my youth.

Another (y) for melamine plates and bowls.

but, wait...melamine plates aren’t microwaveable!

We use the cheapest weak, thin, limp paper plates sitting a top of cool, lightweight wicker flat round ‘baskets’ designed to support the plates and give them better rigidity. If you’re not too messy, you never have to clean up the wicker.

They also make good frisbees when not being used for meals ? but I don’t recommend shooting at them since they’re reuseable.

??
(FUN FACT....the kids can have a blast in camp using those flaming styro plates to play war games. We used to set up fun contests called “I’m the bombardier”, having the youngsters each hold a burning plate up over some scattered pine cone targets laying on the ground, and then try to hit the cones below with flaming ‘bomb’ bits of dripping, burning, black smoking styrofoam falling from the edge of the plates. Yossarian* would have been proud! And yes we always cleaned up afterwards, and no, no forest fires ever were started thusly.

Cool!?

There’s a great, easy to fix, tasty combo like that with fritos in the bag smothered with hot cheese and chili meat ‘n beans that’s always a best seller at the high school kids’ fundraiser food booth sold at the locals’ Tri-County Rodeo in Helena, Mt. each summer. It’s a wonderful quick, healthy ’n hearty, no mess camp meal for the kids too, after a long, tiring day on the road. Camp food at its finest!

Yep! We usually pre cook the beef. So it's just a matter of warming it up. No uncooked beef packaging to deal with or pack. (We always worry about it leaking)

Also foil wrap meal work good too cause you can just use the foil as a plate.

I remember those things. Wow!

I'm currently going through this debate - with 6 people total, 4 of them small children - I want to get something that nests well to reduce space and streamline our gear storage. Originally was thinking of grabbing some stainless stuff but I think the heat transfer is going to make it difficult for the kids (ours are SLOOOOOW eaters sometimes) - I think I am leaning towards some of the cheap-ish GSI plates at $3-4 per, and similar bowls, with stainless silverware.
