Part Number for Pitman Arm Puller?

Does anyone remember the part number of the pitman arm puller you used on your montero? I bought a Lisle 41900 seen in the photo from Rockauto, but it's too large and hits the frame before it makes it over the pitman arm. I've checked all of the local auto parts stores, they just have the same one I already have under different brand names. Vehicle is a 97 Montero SR.

Not sure if this helps as it sounds like you've already tried but I had no issue with the rented tool from AutoZone.. Mine is a '98 so I don't know if there is a difference in configuration.

I think 97 and 98 should be the same, autozone must have a different puller, do you remember if it looked like the one in my picture, or different?

This is the one I use. Works like a champ.View attachment 451684
I remember looking at that one when I bought mine, but it was quite spendy. I think $75 was the cheapest I saw, which was about 5x more expensive than the one I got. For a commonly used tool, that's not too bad, but I don't remember the last time I replaced a pitman arm in the past 15 years.

I think Amazon sells them for $65. I would just call the local auto stores and give them the part number and see if the rent it. I tried using the one you have a picture of but the arms kept slipping off.

Nice, thanks. I've checked all of the nearby stores like napa and o'reillys. I will have to check other stores further away to see what they have, looks like walmart might carry some adjustable pullers as well, looks like I've got some phone calls to make tomorrow.

Had you considered a conical puller ? They need the same headroom for its screw as a two arm puller, but dont need much room around the pittman arm.
I looked at those as well, but don't have any locally, so it would be a guessing game which might fit. I was looking at a OTC 8149 and 8150.

I think it's for pushing out press in style ball joints.
Ahh gotcha. I must be stupid or something because this puller doesn't fit either, it's much too large to fit between the pitman and the frame to close the jaws. Do you have to turn the wheels full lock to get the pitman arm pointing a different direction? I thought you were supposed to keep the wheels straight so you get the splines on correctly. There's no possible way to fit either of my pullers on with the wheels straight.

I think I marked which way it was pointing on the shaft and might have turned the wheels to get the puller up in there. It's been about a year since I've done it. Might have to take one or both of the bolts out that pull the jaws in also and put them back in once it's positioned.

Do you think it's worth loosening the nuts on the steering box and trying to shim the bottom out a bit for clearance? I'm a bit hesitant to turn the wheels since even if I make marks, once I put the new arm in, if it's off one tooth it won't drive straight. Seems like it should be keyed so it goes on one way.
