Well this is a travel site, so how about a people & portraits thread. For me, one of the most compelling reasons to travel is the human element. Seeing new faces, ways of life, the story told in the eyes of another. So what say you?

^The Afar salt miner, now that's a face with a story!

Lac Assal

The lake is the lowest spot in Africa; fourth lowest on earth. It sits just where the Great Rift Valley enters Africa from the Red Sea. As the plates spread apart, the sea flowed in and volcanos surge up, filling the depression with water and sealing it off from the sea. Today, the volcanos are still active and a steady east to west wind spreads out the water and deposits the salt on the shore. For millenia, salt has been a currency in Ethiopia (Abyssenia) and much of it comes from the lake. Many of the miners are Afars and they mine with front end loaders as well as picks and shovels.

This gentleman has a callus on his forehead; the result of a lifetime of pressing his head to the ground in prayer, five times a day.
