Photo marking?

I'm a total photog newbie. I noticed that on my blog stats, one picture I took of Niagra Falls got a lot of hits. I was wondering how does one go about marking photos?

I don't know key terms to search, so if someone could provide that if no one is up for a detailed explanation, that's fine too.

Cheers.

Thank you very much. I don't care if people use them, but I think it'd be cool if I saw a photo some amateur like me took :)

I think you are referring to 'key wording' which is tagging your photo with key words that will make your photo come up in search engines.

Depending on where our photos are stored there should be a process to key word your images.

For example and photo of Niagra Falls can be key worded with:
Niagra, Niagra Falls, New York, Canada, Waterfall, etc. etc.

Always remember when tagging your photos, to include your name in the tag.

This will drive your own name as the photographer up the stats chart.

It's easy when naming all your photos to simply add -Photo by Pat Bonish as I do with all mine so it includes it in the tag, and as a way of watermarking it without there being a watermark on the actual image

would you mind elaborating please? i have no idea how to tag?

You use the "alt" text in the HTML img tag:

http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_img_alt.asp

The alt text is the text you see when you hover your mouse over an image in a web page - not always...some use it, some don't. For instance, rest your mouse pointer over my avatar picture at the top of this post and see what happens. That's the "alt" attribute at work.

But it's part of the web page's HTML code, so the search engine crawler DOES see it and index it into the search database.

And as Pat says, its a good idea to put your name in the file name of the photo, like: beach_sunrise-Photo-by-Korisu.jpg

depending where you upload the photo to, that site might have "tag" ability which allows you to associate your image with certain key words to allow the search engine to pick it up.
