Photographing the eclipse

I realize it's kind of late to be asking this, but I'm in Anchorage so the eclipse doesn't even start for a couple hours. Any suggestions for settings?

I just bought a Nikon D300s and I will likely have my Nikon 80-200 AF-S 2.8 mounted. From what little reading I have done I was thinking ISO 100, f-stop around 8 and then setting the shutter for a 30 second exposure. I have a remote shutter release and Bogen tripod, so I'm not too worried about introducing vibration. Any recommendations from night shot people? Am I on the right track......or?

I'll post pics tomorrow of what I do get. If you're out there tonight shooting please post up yours as well

EDIT - Saw this tutorial linked in another thread http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/13098771_t6ehR It looks like my thinking is backwards. I'll try keeping the aperture at 2.8 and cranking the iso to 1600 or so. We'll see how it goes. It's not like I don't have a couple of hours to play around with different settings lol

Trust the link.

Ron is a sarcastic SOB but a great photographer. Have shot and drank with him on a few occasions.

Here is his top 10...er 40 from the year

I was glad you guys posted these. We have thick clouds and heavy snow lately, so I was definitely not going to see anything.

Thank you!

WOW! Very nice pics. It was overcast and raining here all night... Combined with the fact I didn't even know the eclipse was scheduled!:Wow1:

Last one, 20 seconds to show the stars.

Thank you! I stayed out all night snapping shots without much luck. I'm not as skilled as you, so they didn't do the event justice.

I wanted a token shot to remember the night I shared with the people of 1632 :)

Thanks for the pics!
I tried to stay up, fell asleep, woke up briefly and walked outside to see it at the partial eclipse stage and then went back to bed!

Very cool event though!

Very nice shots. Thanks for sharing.
I tried to get pics of it , but my lil Olympus 7030 p&s couldn't get a good one(or I need to learn how to take pics with it ) and they all seem to be blurry.
But it was neat watching it with binoculars until the clouds rolled in.

Amazing Shots

Amazing Shots crawldit, photomike

Until you've tried taking a shot like this makes you really appreciate these shots.
I would post mine but my best one didn't even come close to these. The shot was straight overhead for me so trying to just frame it was a bugger.
