Picking your brains on a used boondocking camper for 2 people & two dogs

First off, thank you all for reading this and for any advice. I figure why not pick the brains of those who are in the know?

My wife, two dogs and I are looking to graduate from tent/SUV camping -- I camp in the tent attached to the SUV with one of the dogs while she camps in the SUV. We live in the mountains of New Mexico and camp in areas with bears, mountain lions, and many other predators. We NEVER camp at campgrounds, always on public lands, of which New Mexico has TONS of it!
We're looking for a used camper (to help keep the price somewhat lower) that won't rattle apart driving on forest roads, logging roads, and bumpy mountain roads.
The dogs don't like to snuggle with each other, so we would likely need some separate sleeping space for one or both of them.
I think a two person like the Intech Flyer Pursue would likely be too small because of the dogs (though I've not seen one in person, so I may be wrong). I've watched a lot of videos of various campers but am not quite sure what we want yet.

Tow vehicle: 2013 Honda Pilot EXL 4WD -- tow capacity is 4,500lbs

Some that we've looked at in person:

We went to an RV dealer last weekend and the guy kept showing us new Coleman after new Coleman after new Coleman that were all exactly the same and SUCH awful quality.
We also looked at a Viking 12.0 TD that was just horrible quality as well.
We looked at a Taxa Cricket and it was too small for sure.
We looked at a Taxa Mantis and the size is great, but the wife didn't like the used price of $33k. The quality seems really good, especially when compared to the Colemans of the world.
We looked at an Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Max. The price wasn't awful (still more than she wants to pay) at $25k and the size was good, but I don't know that it would do well on the roads we drive when we go camping.

The following things are must-haves:
  • Room for two people and two dogs (one dog is about 35lbs and the other about 55lbs)
  • Big enough to at least sit up inside in the rare occasion it rains here.
  • A rooftop fan
The following things are nice-to-haves:
  • Room to stand for the wife to get dressed
  • Potable water tank -- not a big necessity as typically we'll be camping 1-3 days
  • Shower, either inside or out -- obviously not a huge deal because there are other options for showering like solar showers
  • A/C would be nice, but not a must have since at night in the mountains it typically cools off, but in the day it can get hot
  • Something for the wife to go to the bathroom in -- much like the shower, not a huge deal as there are other options for this that don't come in a camper
The following is a no-go:
  • Pop-up campers are a big no-go due to being in bear country.
    • TO CLARIFY -- we would do something akin to a Taxa Cricket, Taxa Mantis, Overkill SO510, etc that have the roof that pops up, but not like a traditional popup camper with the slide out beds.
It looks like staying away from the major RV builders is what we should probably do from what I've seen and read.
Can anyone suggest anything in the $20k or less area (USED)? Obviously used prices can vary widely as opposed to new prices and based on options and whatnot. I'm very new to campers. If we find something that we think will do, and if one like it is available to rent locally via Outdoorsy or something, we'll likely rent it to check it out. I also plan on having it inspected so we don't buy someone else's problem.

Thanks again for any input anyone has. :)

***EDIT***
Please also feel free to let me know if this type of question is annoying or if I need to provide additional info. :)

Hi Dave, seems like you are in a similar position to my wife and I - although our criteria aren't exactly the same. Anyhow, I've been reading in this subforum a lot lately to get an idea of camper options and the market.
I've seen a couple used Taxa Mantis Overland in the upper-to-mid $20s, so you might be able to negotiate down to lower 20s.
Also I'd consider a used OBI Dweller 13 (hmm, not sure about towing weight with your Honda). There is a thread with over 130 pages. I'm thinking one of those could be had in the mid to low $20s. You would probably have to do some work to get it up to snuff, but there is lots of info on what goes wrong and what needs to be fixed.

No way this is a great question and for some very strange reason (according to my wife) I love helping folks pick trailers that fits there needs. So both overkill and Little Guy are out of business. I guess not a total deal killer but it would have to be a good deal. In that 20 k used budget your still in the mass produced not so good market. I will put some thought into this. My Trail Marker would liklely fit your needs perfect but finding a used one is unlikely to happen.

Ya both are to heavy for the pilot. IMHO

You would be on your own with OBI.

Mantis would make me nervous in bear country.

Dave the following might be an option. Call Loren at Xgrid in Vegas. He is a straight shooter. He has two locations and may have others as well.

Thanks, DVD! I really appreciate it. The OBI Dweller looks awesome but is like 4,700lbs dry so that's unfortunately too much. I definitely appreciate the recommendation, though, because the more of them I look at, the more the AI overlords can figure out the right algorithm for me. 🤣

If you’re already camping in a tent why the concern about a pop up camper with fabric walls?
Good question:
My wife won't sleep in the tent attached to the SUV. She retreats to the back of the SUV and closes the hatch and locks it up, leaving me to enjoy the tent with one of the doggos. So primarily making the wife happy with more safety. And the additional space and getting up off the ground is an additional plus (we're starting to edge up to that age where getting off the ground into a little more comfort is also nice. :)

Thanks, O2! I appreciate your thoughtfulness! :)

Might be a bit small for the dogs and all but I would not go over 4k totally loaded with your Pilot. Out in Virgin UT on a MTB trip. Going to get to NM one of these days!

That's a Trail Marker there? Which model is that? I somehow don't think I've seen them, either, yet. It looks awesome. The dogs mostly just need a spot on the floor or a low bunk-type area. The TetonX looks like a great size. The Taxa Mantis has a bunk area up front that one could sleep on or they fold up to create plenty of floor space for one to sleep. And at night or if we go off on a hike we could always pop the top down for additional safety.

New Mexico is great with the amount of public lands and the ability to camp pretty much anywhere. Just stay away from Albuquerque! :ROFLMAO: I work for a law enforcement agency in the Albuquerque area (as a civilian employee) and crime is just horrendous here. Luckily we quickly moved out of the city up into the mountains fairly shortly after we moved to New Mexico.
We moved here from Iowa close to 7 years ago now. We would love to get to Utah one of these days. It just seems so magical there!

There's a 2023 InTech Flyer Pursue for sale here for $17k, but it seems it might be a bit small. I might have to go take a look at it to see. There's also a 2020 available to rent here on Outdoorsy that we could rent to see if it fits us, I suppose. :)
