Pittsburg Lake 7/23/10

Since Friday July 23 was a state holiday (Pioneer Day) here in Utah I had the day off work (2nd three day weekend in two weeks), I decided to do the hike up to Pittsburgs Lake in American Fork Canyon (has some mining history behind). After seeing a few trip reports or two it seemed like it would be worth the visit. After getting lost I made it to the trail head around 11 am to start the steep mile and half hike to the lake.

On to the photos.

You can just make out the trail to the left

Despite the hike up it was a very good trip. I didn't run into any other people on the hiking trail nor were there signs of any falling rocks. There's more up in that area that I want to explore but that's for another time.

Great lake. I Drove up that road years ago before the forest service shut it down. All I can say is that people not driving on it has made it much worse that it ever was. The big rock outcrop at the hard switch back was the tough spot. The rest of the trail was pretty tame. I'll have to drag my scouts up there this fall.

Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you for your post. I first hiked up to this spot on a Boy Scout 50 mile hike at the age of 12, nearly 30 years ago:eek: . I was last up there in 1988 and really appreciate seeing your post. I hope to make it up there someday soon with my children.

We were up there that same day with a 4x4 group, it was BEAUTIFUL up in the canyon. My girlfriend and I really have wanted to make this hike, but we ran out of time. Great pictures of the area, it makes me want to see it even more!

Did you guys have a blue jepp cherokee or a orange tube buggy in your group? The Cherokee was at the Forest Lake trail head and the buggy was coming up the road.

It's a nice area visit. I think next I'll go in the morning to avoid some of the crowds around Tibble resivor.

No, I was with a group of about 7 Jeep Cherokees and one YJ. Holding it down for the Toyota owners... We were on Forest Lake from about 12 to 3:30, then Mineral Basin from 4 to 8 (we had a lot of playing around)...

Last year at this time I made the hike up to Pittsburg Lake. This year I was accompanied by one of co-workers and his boys and their friend.

The old cabin is still standing even after the massive amount of snow we got this year.
