Pizza Cutter tires...

Hello Gents!

Just a quick question... Who runs on skinny tires, and have any pics of your rigs with said tires?

I have run into a beautiful set of 5 powder coated factory wheels of 15x6 (6 bolt /10 hole) that are too nice to pass up.

I am not a fan of super wide tires, and since I have had for so long Willys jeeps with 600x16 tires, I've grown accustomed to this tire setup. Also, my off reading is not that extreme, so extra mega big tires are not required...

Just wondering what you have out there for tall, skinny tires in you trucks, and what the tallest/ widest application for 15x6 is recommended so I can evaluate options.

Thanks!

I think 235 85 is a pretty popular size, but i'm not sure how the availability is for that size, companies are moving towards bigger widths, and bigger wheels these days.

I prefer the look of a 10.5 tyre myself, but I got a set of 12.5s at a very good price secondhand, and I can't get over how much more comfort they have given me, and they don't get kicked around the road as much in all the potholes and craters we get around here.

Doubt you'll find many here, there is an endless list of advantages to large tires. Some are obvious like contact patch, clearance, but protecting the body of the vehicle is an example of one some dont think of. If you are not going off-road little 235's ought to give you some great gas mileage.

I think the most popular size here for factory 15" wheels is 33x10.50. They fit the wheel wells of most Monteros without a lift and are fairly skinny for good mileage and better bite but tall for good clearance and a decent size contact patch when aired down. If you move up to 16" wheels the 235/85 and 255/85 sizes open up the possibilities.

34 X 9.50 (or 10.50) X 15in swampers look cool on old rigs.
Here's a set of 33 x 10.50 x 15's:

I've run 255/85r16 Toyo MTs (33.5"x10.5"). Then 315/75R16 (35s). Now Ko2 34x10.5R17.

Skinny tires are lighter, track better on road, better MPG (less rolling resistance), easier on suspension/bearings/joints. However, I think you need a tire with 8-9" actual tread width (most you need to measure - not the same as section width). Narrower than that and there are more disadvantages... lateral stability (cornering), lack of flotation (snow, sand).

I've got 235/85R16s on my Gen 3 - don't think I'd repeat. Wish I could find 255/85R16 in an AT - I think that would be great. Maybe will look at Ko2 34x10.5R17 next. I have both 16" and 17" wheels for this truck.

here's a good article I like to share with people when the topic of skinny and narrow tires come up.

http://www.expeditionswest.com/research/white_papers/tire_selection_rev1.html

There's at least one owner of each generation on here with skinny tire set ups, there's a gen 2 in particular i am thinking of that has steel 17" wheels, i think from an FJ cruiser. I can't recall but his rig looks great. you might find photos in the the post your montero pics thread.

Here's the source thread for that article and probably has more info that you'd like to get:

In terms of on-road driving, how do the 33x10.50 on factory wheels stack up against a 33x12.50 on a 15x8 wheel in regards to stability and ride quality? Basically I don't want to put tires on my Montero (97 LS) that would present any safety issues when my wife drives it to work. OTOH, not needing new wheels and body lift would be quite nice.

What year truck are you referencing? I've had a wide variety of tires on my '88 over the years - up to the current 33 x 12.5 MTZs. I think that 33x10.5s on Gen 2 trucks are really good, and really don't need a lift to run them (maybe a little torsion bar tweek to set ride height level front to back)
