points of failure in brake system on 7.3 E350s?

Brakes went kaplooey today. fortunately, I was only backing the camper into the shop at the new digs.

Approaching zero braking power, very stiff pedal. What appears to be brake fluid all over the engine/front end. It was dripping off the crank pulley, and blown all over the engine compartment by the fan.

Any known weak spots to begin my troubleshooting?

stiff pedal and no power points towards vacuum booster. but the fluid is throwing me off the scent.

There is no vacuum booster on a 7.3 Diesel - sound like a Hydroboost problem. Is it brake fluid or power steering fluid from the Hydroboost or P/S line to/from the Hydroboost? Brake fluid will rinse off with water, P/S fluid will not - get some on your hand and put it under the water.

The only E series rigs that have hydroboost are the 450's. Since fluid is everywhere it may be hard to tell where it was coming from. You may have to clean it up, add fluid and re create the leak while inspecting to find it. Sounds like the MC or ABS unit though, unless a line got damaged (highly unlikely)

I meant vacuum pump going out, not booster. Tired from moving into new place.

Going to tackle troubleshooting this over the next few days as we get settled in.

I just re-sealed the fuel bowl - don't think there is anything up top that I might have accidentally disturbed though.

Does it run a vacuum boost or hydro boost. Sounds like a blown power steering hose to me. Easy to tell the difference between the fluids.

Ok I just worked out not to reply on the plane and not send until the next day. Ignore the previous post.

Also Chris my van is an E350 and it has hydro boost.

Correct on that. I wasn't paying attention and only thinking of the F series 7.3s I've had.

P.s. if it is brake fluid, rinse it off right away and don't let it get on your paint.

I figured that!

Interesting. Maybe because its a LWB?
