Pop out bed discussion

Yes, it has occurred to me that the side window/s on any van could be removed and a slide or flip-out made. The hole is already there:)

Well guys, I know this topic is mainly soft tent extensions, but I was coincidentally researching slide outs and just had to share. Great West Van made a model of the Classic Supreme with an optional slide out. It seems to be out of production now.

My apologies if this model is already well known to the expo veterans. :)

In thinking a little more about the concept of extending the bed out the rear doors (like Herbie's show and tell above), these two might be closer to the spirit of the thread:

A home made effort that looks to use mega drawer slides, as bloged about here:

Roadtrek must have liked the idea, because they have semi-recently implemented it on a short wheelbase Sprinter:

Thats EXACTLY what I I was talking about when I started the thread. Although the rear tent extensions out the back door are an idea I never thought of, and now that it has been discussed, think its probably a better idea for ease and affordability of implementation. The slide out from GWV would be a nicer setup, but its pretty much dedicated to that vehicle & cant easily be transferred to another should an accident occur.

this is the deal here for me
Santa, please send one

Cut a big hole
reinforce with a structural "rim" welded to the factory ribs
A light weight composite something with a couple of motors
that would do the deal

side slider door could be easily converted to a pop out, you would lose the use of the door but it could be a huge addition to your floor space.

I had the same thought on sliding the rear doors out so basically the whole bed would hang off the end of the van, when you were done you could just push it in like a drawer and the bed would be back inside. Or if you really want to get fancy make the rear wall your kitchen and it would be mounted on slides that would slide open then you could still open the rear doors (mounted on the slide out section) and access the kitchen from the back side/outside so if you wanted to use the kitchen from the outside you could or you could use it from the inside to. Stupid brain takes simple things and runs with it every time!!!!

Talk about Junk in the Trunk!

Really that's a lot of weight behind the rear axle of that Dodge. Good use of space though.

That is the idea! Both look to be sort of poorly executed, why not just leave the doors attached to the slide out so you would grab the door handle and slide the whole works open. Leaving the doors on the original hinges seems like a waste of space and one more thing you have to deal with to deploy the slide out. Plus if you welded the doors together and used canvas for the slide out wall you weight gain behind the rear axle would be minimal.
