Pop up Camper run

The spring break crowd/kids win the date contest as far as I'm concerned. What works for you folks with kids?

Saturday, March 30 thru Sunday, April 7 is Spring Break for all the public schools I know of here in San Diego. Probably LA also.

OK, command decision, let's do this April 4-7.

I'm thinking we have a central meeting area/camp for the night of Thursday the 4th, travel/camp Friday and Sat nights along the way. Head towards pavement Sunday morning, hopefully getting everyone home by Sunday night.

General plan

April 4th, Meet/greet at a camp area.
April 5, hit the trail around 9AM. Gives any one that can't swing a 4 day weekend to meet us Friday morning. camp where we land.
April 6, camp where ever we are
April 7, off the trail/back to pavement by lunch time.

I'm serious about someone else with more DV knowledge/experience with DV travel in a full size plan a route for us. I'm just as interested in the camping as I am covering a lot of ground/seeing the sights, but I'm good with anything. Camp area's with nearby attractions for the more adventurous would be the doo doo!:sombrero:

Another issue is going to be the number of vehicles in the group. Groups are limited to six vehicles. We may need to "separate" into 2 groups. We can figure out the logistics on that one as we go/get firm commitments. If someone has a better idea than DV, lets hear it. I threw DV out there because I thought it would be a centralized location.

Right now it looks like I'm good with the April dates. If most attendees are coming from I-15 may I suggest that it might be convenient to do the first night's camp somewhere near the Harry Wade Exit Route off Hwy 127 and enter the park from there. Dumont Dunes, Silver Lake, (fresh water clam shells from the last ice age can be found at Silver Lake), or even the Harry Wade Route itself could be a first night's camp spot. The Harry Wade is sandy and washboard but if the Amargosa River Crossing isn't flooded, which it probably won't be, it's a good way to get the rigs dirty and enter the park. On the way in Visit Saratoga Springs, etc. Just a suggestion.

First post updated. Post or PM me commitments and I'll add you to the list.

That's new ground for me, so I'm good with it...discussion?

Random conversation...

One rule...nobody gets left behind.

I've got no interest in being "in charge" of anything. I started the thread, so I'll do my best to coordinate the information in the first post, other than that it's a group effort.

I don't have a CB in my truck, I do have HAM/2 way race radio's. I also have a handheld HAM that I can let someone borrow if need be.

I can't help but carry too much stuff with me. I'll have a decent set of hand tools, power tools, and a welder with me. Helping fix some one else's stuff doesn't bother me. Breaking/having to fix my own stuff drives me crazy!:sombrero:

My dogs are friendly, usually get along with other dogs. They are often unleashed and roaming around camp. If they bother you or you aren't comfortable with them being off leash, tell me, and I'll do something about it.

Hi Bob - and other good folks - I might could make this one as I'll be traveling in Calif then during a three month trip I'm planing. I'm working on dates and such now and will be a bit more firm in a week. This trip is the first with my FWC as it's still under restoration. I'd have to hang with the 2WD gang, hoping a Tacoma Prerunner with suspension mods, but with stock tires will suffice. Just bought the truck and can't spring for better tires along with the costs of the resto.
Cheers,
Tom

Bob,

Put my name on the list. Not sure if Susie can make it but it looks like I can swing it. Also, it would be nice to have both two and four wheel drive folks all together and not be split up, IMO. Many of the back roads are 2 wheel drive friendly and still fun to drive. Anyway I can help please let me know.

It seems that most of us that use our trucks/campers for our travels are out there by ourselves more often than not. I know that my set up would never keep up with the groups I generally run with.

Anyone have any interest of getting together this spring for a jaunt through Death Valley? Take a look at the calender, see what weekend would work, and if someone that has experience in a full size there could outline a sensible two day route, that would be cool. From another thread, it was noted that groups are limited to 6 vehicles.

I think it would be fun to spend a couple of days sharing ideas and having a good time.

For date conflicts keep in mind, the TDS Desert Safari is the first weekend of March, and Desert Rendezvous will be mixed in there somewhere.

There is at least one other group fro this forum going the weekend of 3/27-31.

Update:

Dates are set, April 4-7.

Need to get a list of commitments together. It's been suggested that we split the group into 2wd/4wd if need be. Post in the thread or PM me if you want to commit.

1. bob91yj, Bob Green, my wife Machelle, two Boxer dogs, 4wd GMC Dmax.
2. topofpalomar, Cliff, 4wd Chevy Dmax
3.
4.

Would love to do this, but other commitments have me tied up. Have a good run, looking forward to the write up.

From the other group (in CA/NV thread) map, you would be safe on the yellow and green route. The red has a tight spot on the north end that full sizes can have trouble with sans camper, but I haven't done the rest of the red.

I'll mark up a map later with the last trip I took, as it would be friendly to trucks with camper as long as some desert pin striping is ok.

A few of my buddies are going on a run President's Day weekend, also thinking of starting their journey at the south end of the park. This was posted by one of them. Good info, thought I'd pass it along....

Take 1-15 North to CA-127 North (exit #246) at Baker. From there its approx. 60 miles to Shoshone. There is a campsite near Saratoga Springs, the extreme south boundary of the Park. The turnoff for Saratoga is at Harry Wade Road, 27 miles SOUTH of Shoshone. (ie, before you reach Shoshone). Saratoga is a several mile spur road off Harry Wade Road.

There is stuff in Baker, about 30 miles south of Harry Wade Road, where you get off I-15. There is one small hotel and gas station in Shoshone. Otherwise, once you leave the freeway there is nothing out there.
