Portable Satellite Internet

You should check the last couple of episodes of hak5 on hak5.org

The technology is there and faster then I thought it was but very expensive. 9 to 20 dollars a meg. Hardware ranging from 900 (slowest) to 25k+ (fastest).

I work in datacenters where bandwidth is .25 to 1dollar a meg.

Thanks for the update Matt, I find the info in this thread great. I start working at a company next week where I will be 100% remote as they are located on the east coast, and I am not. I figure I will work normally from home on high speed internet for a few months as its a new position, but down the road will have a better idea of usage, and will decide if its worth it to rent a unit to test the speed connection and make sure it is sufficient for what I am doing. I will keep an eye on this thread for updates along the way.

Everyones usage will be different, but I will post up my findings so we can get something from both ends of the spectrum, the minimalist side like unwiredadventures, vs full time work. My hunch is it wont pan out, but at least its an option for now.

Thanks for the comments Wiley, and it's great that you will be "cutting the proverbial leash"!

I always recommend renting a terminal to get some hands-on with it before committing to purchase one. As far as per MB costs, BGAN is the cheapest mobile satellite solution for data. If all you are needing to do for your critical business communications is text based email, there are a lot of emails you can get out of a single MB.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions as you get closer to deploying your remote office.

Unfortunately, those BGAN rates weren't reported entirely accurately. The most you'll pay is about $9-10 per MB for prepaid airtime and about $6.50/MB for postpaid plans. The maritime systems do tend to be more in that price range for data, however. Also, land portable BGAN equipment costs range from around $1800 to $6500. Sometimes used terminals become available which is why you might see one in the $900 range. Vehicular BGAN terminals range from about $6300 to $17,000. In terms of bandwidth, depending on the terminal, you will get anywhere from 384kbps to 492kpbs in the background IP mode.
