Possible disco 2 buyer

I'm looking at replacing my ford sport trac in the next year and would love a discovery 2 to turn into an exped vehicle. I know 00-04 can be found for anywhere from 2-5k. I was just wondering about how much I should have saved up to add a rack and front bumper plus make it a reliable daily driver (I currently have a 20 mile one way commute but that could change to 0 very soon)? Thanks so much.

I agree, that commute could definitely turn to 0 if you get a Disco :)

Bumpers are anywhere from $600-$1400 or so, add a winch if you really want an expedition vehicle.
Racks are around $1200 or so but shipping is pretty painful.
$$ spent on reliability is relative to the maintenance done by the previous owner and where the vehicle was living.

Reliability hahahahahahahaaaaa.
How handy are you with a wrench?

If you arent. get a landcruiser. if you're capable of spinning wrenches, by all means, get the rover.

Haha I would be fixing the landy while still driving the sport trac so initial reliability wouldn't be an issue. I would love to fix most of it myself while learning about them, I'm already fairly handy at most stuff. And my commute might drop to zero because I might take a new job where I'd live on base.

300k is actually a good thing. means the heads were done a few times, trans once, and the driveshaft has been overhauled a time or two.

Most of the higher mileage rovers I've owned and serviced were in great shape. the younger ones are typically neglected.

Dude don't sell the Sport Trac, I had one when I was living in Connecticut and they are totally legit!

I like my Disco, but I could have bought 3 Sport Tracs for the amount that I've put into it!

How did you have the sport trac set up? The bed isn't long enough for me to sleep in. Plus it isn't 4wd but I definitely see the advantages. What did you have done to it?

I knew of one company that made a full sized roof rack over the bed and onto the back section of the cab... I remember looking into it back in 2008 or 2009, but the money just wasn't there for me, though I'm sure you could fab one up pretty easy. I had a small spacer lift that was originally for the F-150 (I think?) that the PO had installed as well as 265/75R16 BFG All Terrains. A few guys that were on the forums ran obscene body lifts with 33+ tires, but they really had to bodge stuff together from loose ends of other kits. I just remember the aftermarket for the Sport Tracs being super weak and I wanted to modify my vehicle more.

After 4 years and 2 Discovery's I can safely say that I prefer the Disco through and through, but I still have good memories of the Sport Trac. I'm just saying if you have something good with the ST, don't leave it. If you want something reliable, don't look for it in a Disco. I love mine, but after having it spend the last 4 months or so in a shop and a new engine (in fairness, part of that was my doing, as we originally tried doing something different with it, and as it always seems, it didn't work out) I cannot say its particularly reliable. However if you have the itching for a different vehicle that has somewhat of a cult following and you like surprising jeep owners when you are off road who think its a yuppies car then maybe its for you.

plan on spending 30k minimum on it to make it reliable (really no pun intended)and ready to be expedition ready ..... I for one know what Disco fever can cost :Wow1:

To be fair your truck is insane, truly the higher end D2. You could have a CV8 put in with rebuilt t-case and transmission with some accessories etc for less than 15k.

I think the key phrase is "daily driver and expedition ready" , you are correct, I'm at $37,000 , not counting the cost of the vehicle. And I have my own mechanics on staff.

Sorry to say, roof rack and bumper don't make reliability, or expo ready.

Yes , you are correct. But now your on to suspension, lockers, re gearing , driveshafts, brakes , wheels, tires.
Even on the cheap end that's another $5-$7k and that's if you do the work yourself.

Add that to your assessment for drive train, you're at $22-$25k

Don't sell it short, you gotta have $20k in yours!?

"expo ready" is relative. It's hard to go 2 hours in the US without hitting a gas station/mcdonalds.

"expo" people could put 31s and new bumpers on and be done with it. Winch out of most situations, etc.
