Very cool M35A2. I'm familiar because in the search for my 4x4 two years ago I seriously considered the M1009 which was equipped with something similar. I ended up with an '89 Jimmy b/c I wanted A/C and a trans with OD, not to mention I'm more comfortable working on the gas 350 as opposed to the 6.2L diesel.

Might have to find one of those for the Jimmy... Where did you source yours? It looks to be in fantastic shape.

I got it from one of the popular on-line military vehicle surplus vendors. I'm pretty sure this one came from Saturn Surplus. It is a new knock-off (plastic housing instead of metal like the oldest military units were), as I recall it was not expensive. Mounting is by one stud that also serves as ground. It came with a 12v bulb. I scuffed it with a Scotch-Brite pad and hit it with Krylon satin black, as it is cast in OD green. That photo was taken after it had been on a year. The light comes with the proper waterproof military rubber boot connector; I kept this as I am converting my Jeep military-spec wiring and connectors. I shrink-wrapped the wire feed and ran the wire through a grommet in the flat fender.

Yes! They are called black-out lights. The one in front projects a flat beam of light, not too wide, that is angled towards the ground and hits the ground about ten feet in front of the vehicle. Those in back provide a tiny bit of illumination, just to see where the vehicle is. The idea is that at night, the driver gets just enough light to be able to slowly manuever the vehicle -usually at walking speed, because ground troops are usually walking behind - and that's why there is a black-out light on the rear. Black-out lights preserve the night vision of all concerned, and do not afford a sniper a bright light source to aim at. I like the way they look and do in fact use them, out on the trail, exactly as intended, when I do not want to disturb anyone or affect my own night vision, and at home for the same reasons. This one has a regular 1157 bulb inside. Some have LEDs. CUCVs have them, as does just about every other US military vehicle since WWII.

one detail left out in an otherwise good explanation of the black out light... the use for the military is more specific as to the forward facing one, is so that the normally bright light given off my the head lights do not over power and interfere with the Night Vision equipment. I myself am quite familiar with the use and set up of this system given my 6 years in the military with one year in the Iraqi Theater. Other than for training never had to use them myself.

I've been wheeling for fifteen years, my interest is changing from hard trails to family outings and camping. taking the YJ and making it street legal and getting it setup for long trips. I might even put a windshield on it...

I've posted a couple before, but here's a few new ones....
This was at Pismo Beach this Saturday
it was a windy, fairly cold day, we had quite a bit of rain in the days before so the sand was fairly wet and grippy
but the crowd was very thin, so we had a great time.
