So there was a thread with some questions, answers, and examples so lets see what everyone was able to capture the other night(s).

Here are a couple from Maricopa AZ.

Nice job, those look great.

I on the other hand, sat on my butt and drank bourbon to watch the show and didn't take any pictures. Oh well, I have them in my memory. :sombrero:

Those are great pictures! Nothing super spectacular, but a nice, small display at the Hollywood Bowl with John Fogerty.

Cindy and I were stuck in Yellowstone which had no fireworks due to fire danger, you on the other hand got some great shots.

Here is a shot I got a few years ago when we were in Michigan for the Detroit/Windsor Freedom Festival on the Detroit River

Here are a few that I like. Thanks for the help guys. Taken with my new D90 (got it at the end of April. I'm still learning.)

EDIT: These just don't do the actual pictures justice, they are much sharper in RAW format. :(

I took a couple. It's the first time I've tried fireworks so the results were so so.

I do have a few questions though. Firework pics first.

Ok, now my questions and they relate to this next photo.
20090704_1854.jpg

I'm getting frustrated with some of my night photos. The lights in the images just don't seem to be sharp. Everything else is in focus and I think the lights are also but they seem to always have a halo or kind of look smudgy.

I'm shooting with a crop sensor D80 and usually a 18-200MM DX lens. What usually causes this? Tripod not steady enough? Lens or camera quality not up to par? Is there something special I should be doing as far as apature and shutter speed? Maybe since I am up high and away from the city I'm getting interference from the atmosphere? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In reguards to your question about what you're doing wrong, there are a host of answers depending on some circumstances.

Length of exposure, tripod sturdiness, heat waves depending on location...etc.

Post your EXIF Data which will give us some more info to go on and let us know the type of tripod and head you're using.

I know a light weight tripod on an even somewhat windy night can cause all sorts of havoc. A lens only needs to move enough from the shutter flap (are you using the mirro lock up function?) to cause the slightest of blur.

I think from what you're posting, you could shapren it up pretty well in Photochop with a filter>unsharp mask and then play with the settings till you like what you see

I am a big fan of the fireworks show put on by the city of Scotts Valley, CA every year. The town fathers determined that the best launchpad for the fireworks is a 3 acre field of dry grass. Every year they manage to catch something on fire. (see bottom right)

Not seen in this picture is the giant Suburban Propane tank right next to us. I love small town fireworks shows...

Then I gave the camera to my wife, Leslie "Jackson" Pollock:

Here is one I took in Lagrange, GA. Actually it is either 2, 3 or 4 shots stacked.

Bump for 2010

This year I wanted to try something different. Tired of the same old same old I wanted to see if I could explore fireworks with a bit of a different perspective. It took me a while to figure out what was working and what wasn't, and unfortunately before I knew it the show was over. Needless to say I hope to have better luck next year but this is what I was able to salvage from my little experiment. Certainly there's nothing here that's going to make it into the portfolio but I felt it was worth sharing as I'm sure many of you will be watching a light show on the 4th.

Our towns show isnt till Snday night, so I'll be sure to post some stuff up on Monday morning, or afternoon depending on how wild the party is:sombrero:

Trevor, make sure you write down all your notes and thoughts while they're still fresh in your head so next year you'll be able to pick right up where you left off this year

There was a discussion on here last year on how to shoot Fireworks right? Anyone have that link? I'd like to take a look at it and get some pointers before getting some shots this year.
