Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

I hear a Montero can reach speeds of nearly 95mph on the salt flats, if given enough room. And in a vacuum. :)

Geez, I couldn't imagine the fuel consumption at triple digits in this thing. The aerodynamics are like driving around in a 2-story building.

Hah. Actually, I calculated a 19.8, a 20.6, and 20.9 mpg tanks. Averaged 18.3 on the whole trip. Tire size compensated.

I got up to 88mph. But no sparks or flashes of light and I'm still in 2013.

My Raider once traveled at about 90 with a trailer, GPS speed indicated. There is an 8 degree grade descending from Red Lake (below Kirkwood, CA), that has about 5 miles straight for a nice coasting run. Yes, I immediately slowed down.

Damn! Best tank I got so far, all highway at ~60 to ~70, was ~16.8 mpg. Almost a full tank of highway driving with no stops. Filled up before we got on the freeway, then filled up about 300 miles later and calculated. Though, come to think of it - I don't know if I was compensating for tire size then. So it *might* have been ~17.8 mpg. Can't remember for sure now.

Oh, but those numbers were at altitude. When going to and from the higher elevations (Alllll day transit across Texas) I was getting about 16mpg at 65mph. I attribute the better fuel consumption to the higher altitude.

Welcome back Sean, how were the trails up there? Doesn't look too smokey in those photos, but I'm surprised at the lack of recovery from that fire a few years ago

Thanks! No traces of smoke from any recent/current fires. Trails were in decent shape, got a little damp but nothing significant (some scattered/light showers the night before we came up). Yes, a few burn areas still look rough...I'd guess just because of the overall dry weather we've had the last few years. It looks like a little precipitation would go a long way. It was stupid crowded at the river sites near Kernville, and surprisingly empty up in the back of the meadows (we went all the way back to the dead end above Monache and camped there). Lots of bike riders in lower Monache but we didn't see/hear them in our area, just passed them on the way in. Weather was *perfect*!
