Preparing for *another* Lost Coast trip

My last trip was really a "pre-run" of sorts to show some other people how the road was to get to Usal Beach. And, well, why not go again, since I have a weekend with nothing scheduled?

Since getting back the last time, the belts were loose on the old Grand Wagoneer, and the tires, being out of balance due to them throwing their weights, are kind of choppy to drive on. Also we learned that there is no cell service for at least an hour from the camping area.

I may have a tad too much toe-out for the M/T's on the Jeep right now, when I had BFG A/T's they didn't feather like these M/T's are on the front. It's at 1/8" toe-out right now, I'm going to reduce it closer to 0 & see how it drives. Also, I'm receiving some Centramatic dynamic balancers today, and given they fit (not too sure about that yet), I'll report on how well they take care of my M/T's.

I got a Midland CB installed as well, so we can communicate better. Last time we (attmepted) to use some FRS radios, but driving on the freeway it was very hard to understand the other person; even though we could see the other vehicle, they came through mostly as static. In the interest of making things easier for the others, I also picked up a Midland hand-held CB that I can easily hand to whoever may be joining us.

Of course I've tightened the belts and replaced the air filter. I use the Fram Tough Guard oiled filters, and they do a great job but also attract dirt. I drive with my air filter lid upside-down, as it does help get some more air in the engine, and helps on some of those hill climbs on Hwy 101. Living in CA, there's not much I can really do as far as power adders go, however a new exhaust system, with Edelbrock CA legal heders, is in the plans.

If anyone is in the area and would like to join us on this trip, we'll be meeting Saturday morning, 9:00 am, at:
2260 Apollo Way
Santa Rosa, CA 95407
You could email me as well, cbc@sonic.net

I'll throw in a pic just anyway :)

I recieved & installed the Centramatic balancers yesterday, and wow, the ride is so nice now.

I hadn't noticed during my previous rotation of my tires that ALL of the balancing weights were gone. When I was installing the Centramatics I took notice, that indeed there were no weights left on any of the wheels.

They are noisy when driving slow. Basiclly imagine bb's rolling around in a coffee can, maybe with some oil thrown in there. At about 20 to 25 mph, they stop making noise & start balancing the tires. The ride is actually much improved at any speed above 25 mph.

I may be more in tune to my vehicle than most people, so the noise for me will take a while to get used to. All of the articles I've read about them though don't mention the noise unless the owner was in a fast food drive through or something similar.

Now I never have to have my tires balanced, again!

Automotive ADHD is fun!
You can hear... anything... over the sound of your engine? I guess not everybody has flowmasters on their 360's!

Wish I could go on the trip - seems like the Lost Coast is one of my unattainables lately.

BKCowGod: I'll keep you posted as to when we really to a long trip to the Lost Coast. I know a friend of mine here at work is very interested in driving the dirt road for a pretty good distance. Multi-day journey :) I'll have to bring a few gas cans, but it should be a blast. As for the noise... well, I currently have a stock exhaust system, which may even be original. Really pretty quiet setup, the loud parts are the tires at the moment! I'll be looking forward to installing the BJ's exhaust system later on.

Eric06Rubi: Good idea, I run 1/8" toe-in on my VW Bug, and the tires wear evenly. They probably spec'd 1/8" toe-out since I have selec-trac, which was designed to be a "full time" 4wd system. When I get some time I'll adjust it & report back. Key words: free time; I may not get to do that adjustment until after this trip at this point, but oh well. Maybe I'll do it while I'm out there :) Thanks for the info!
