Preventative Maintenance Upgrades

With 183K on the clock and a strange grumbling sound coming from the rear when I first start the rig up, the time seems right to do some more baselining. If I ever make it home long enough to relax and work on the rig, there are few things I would like to give some attention to: alternator, fuel pump, filters, tie-rod ends, etc.

Are there proven upgrades to any of these? A higher output long life alternator would be nice. A super dependable fuel pump would also be peace of mind. I want to upgrade before I need to and the old working components can go in the long distance crash box.

Thoughts?

I would call the existing fuel pump super reliable given the mileage it has accumulated. Perhaps call CruiserDan and get another OE fuel pump?

For an alternator upgrade I'd suggest searching 'Mud. No idea what might be available. What is the current unit's output? High output and long life tend to be on opposite sides of the balance beam.

D,

I believe you can upgrade your alternator to a Sequoia model...150A if a recall correctly, but check MUD for sure.

x2 on the OEM fuel pump. Consider how many miles it has already.

Check the MUD FAQ to see what needs some love, and what else can be done "while you are in there."

PS- Give me a call, please.

Not sure if they make MeanGreen Alternators for the 80's but they have one for the 100 and it looks pretty robust. Might want to check there, or replace it with a seq. one (as mentioned above)

OEM all the Way

Long time lurker.... First time poster....

From personal experience... The Mean Green Alt is a way over priced unit. Find the alternator bracket made by "Photoman" on MUD, it will let you upgrade the factory 80 amp unit to a Sequoia/Tundra model ranging from 130-150 amps. $75 for the bracket and $75 (lucky find) for a gently used & inspected/tested 150 amp Tundra alt. Spent another $60 or so on heavier gauge cables to better handle the added amperage. I believe this to be a more cost effective way of gaining nearly double the amps.... I'll get some pics posted up next week when the project gets finished up.... At the same time I am updating to dual Die Hard Plat's using the National Luna system.

I second the vote for a new OEM fuel pump.... your last one went 183k... how could you ask for more... unless of course forced induction is in your near future then an upgrade is in order... but still OEM. I believe the Supra pump is a direct swap and capable of supporting around 400hp. Call up CDan he'll take care of you....

And too all thanks for all the motivating/informative info on this site.... I now find this to be a daily routine right after I log off Mud. I look forward to sharing many of my recent projects....

The mean green has received less-than-favorable reviews. Many consider it over-priced and not worth the $$$.

I echo everyone's sentiments with the fuel pump. I ran tons of baja gas in mine and never had a problem. Although I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace it if you want to be super-proactive. I would check mud and talk to CDan first though.

Filters... Fuel would probably be the most beneficial, but it is in a tough to reach location. The other ones have already been done I am sure.

Tie rod ends... I believe Slee sells some. Obviously anything Slee makes is top-notch.

With regards to baselining, you could perform the PHH and replace all the "other" associated cooling hoses in the engine compartment. Perfect time for this, especially since summer is approaching. That would be my recommendation.
