1991 Toyota Land Cruiser VX-Limited 1HDT Auto HDJ81V with Mulgo Poptop
$49,900 (New price)
Located in Incline Village, NV
Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/gscsuUHPUboAfnDJA
This beautiful rust-free, right hand drive 1991 Land Cruiser VX-Limited has approximately 224,750 Kilometers (~139k miles) and is equipped with a factory 1HDT turbo-diesel engine, factory locking differentials, an automatic transmission, and a rare integrated Mulgo pop top tent. No expense has been spared, with tens of thousands in restorative mechanical work completed in the last six years. This vehicle is a turn-key build, requiring not much else for extensive overland travel, and it would also make a fantastic daily driver with massaging and heated Scheel-Mann seats. Has a range of nearly 1000 miles, and includes a full spares package.
This HDJ81 was previously owned and built by Overland Journal podcast host, Matt Scott. During Matt’s ownership, he wrote the following article extolling the 80 Series enduring popularity: https://expeditionportal.com/why-the-land-cruiser-80-series-is-the-next-classic-4wd/
Highlights of the build include a G-Turbo, HPD Intercooler, and a turbo-back Beaudesert exhaust. It has a Kaymar dual swing-out bumper, TJM front bumper, with a 24 gallon Long Range Automotive auxiliary tank. It is equipped with a Webasto Diesel Coolant heater to ensure a warm engine at any time with no plug ins required. It has dual batteries, a RedArc isolator and dual voltage gauge, and a Switch Pro 9100 for all accessory wiring.
The Mulgo Pop Top was imported from Australia and installed in the US, fully replacing the factory roof. The pop top rises to a steep angle, and the integrated bed platform pushes up and out of the way, providing lots of headroom, even when standing on the MSA drawers down below. The tall roof provides for a non-claustrophobic sleeping area.
The vehicle was imported from Japan by Land Cruisers Direct and comes with an odometer and crash history certification.
Highlights:
This vehicle was completely stock in August of 2018 when it was underwent significant preventative maintenance by Land Cruisers Direct where the engine received a full service including a valve adjustment, timing belt, bottom end bearings, a full injector pump and injector rebuild, a new water pump, all new rubber coolant hoses (including to the secondary in-cab heater), a new OEM radiator, a new fan clutch, an US-spec transmission cooler. One of the last remaining OEM Toyota 80 Series Snorkels was installed at the same time.
The brakes were also upgraded to larger NA-spec units, with remanufactured calipers and new rotors. The brake master cylinder was replaced along with all brake lines with extended stainless units. All wheel and axle bearings, axle seals, driveshaft u joints, tie rod ends were also replaced. Knuckles were also rebuilt with OEM parts. Nearly every seal that holds oil has been replaced with an OEM Genuine part.
It is equipped with Scheel-Mann Vario XXL seats with a two stage massage function, covered in a custom grey wool material to match the interior and give a nod to the Japanese who use wool over leather in luxury vehicles. These seats are heated, and wired into OEM heated seat switches in a factory location. This material also breathes well in the heat. Adding to the comfort of the vehicle are two-inch OME HD lift springs and compression adjustable 2.5-inch King Shocks, with remote reservoirs, which are valved specifically for heavier vehicles.
Summit 4X4 Company in Prescott AZ re-geared the vehicle with a 4.56 ratio and installed upgraded chromoly birf joints in the front axle, and heavy-duty Nitro rear axle shafts. This pairs well with the 34-inch tires, while accounting for the diesel engine’s low torque and limited RPM range (which is why we didn’t go with 4.88s). This allows it to drive at modern vehicle speeds on the highway, without causing EGT issues.
The vehicle was originally dark grey, and was painted black in Japan. The paint is fine and has good shine, but shows its age. It looks great until you get very close and start searching, where you will notice evidence of the respray. There are a few scratches around the otherwise straight and rust free body.
The only issues I’ve uncovered are:

The only issues I’ve uncovered are:
- Windshield washer reservoir leaks and needs to be sealed or replaced.
- Windshield wiper motor is a bit slower / less power than when new
- Passenger exterior door handle is a bit loose
