I'm not saying I'd undertake an "expedition" in this - I have a Land Rover for that. But I did do a 500-mile offroad adventure called the Gambler 500 and came away pretty impressed with the practicality, if not the looks, of this thing. It's a 2001 Pontiac Aztek, FWD (but it could be had in AWD), and it has a buttload of cargo space, a factory tent and air mattress, available biking and hiking packages, a sturdy roof rack, and an available sliding cargo tray. We put some bigger offroad tires (Cooper Discoverer APR) on it and then just drove it like it was cheap - which it was.

Hey man, Walter White really liked his...

In all seriousness, looks like you had a lot of fun. I 100% agree that it's not what you drive. The idea of this form of recreation is not the vehicle but the experiences you get to have with it. That's why we do what we do.

I've always considered the Aztek to be one of the five ugliest cars produced in the USA. I am now rethinking my list. Mind you, it may only drop to number six, but this is a very good looking off-beat-rally kind of car. Besides, which Soccer Mom would not love to go to the game with an axe mounted on her rear window?

And I think that "sturdy roof rack" is the WalMart special.
