Hi there, I'm at the point where I'm wanting some advise from those in the know so i figured I'd toss some pics on here and hopefully you can help me finish her off.
So first off here is my wheeler/tow rig. It was a 5 year build and I've been enjoying it over the past year and a half.
About 10 years ago I was picking up some bronco parts at a guys place and he had this trailer that he had built by taking a bronco tub and two hard tops and welding them together.
I thought it was super cool and had always planned on building something similar. Recently due to gas prices I sold my pickup and my new daily driver is an import station wagon. So my want for a trailer was transitioning more into a need. The trailer above was super cool but it was pretty small. I camp with my family using a starcraft tent trailer as well. My mind starting going as to how I could build a trailer to use as a dual purpose cargo/camp trailer. Something that the wife, kids and I could camp in so i could sell the tent trailer and not store both, as well as be able to do some real camping and not just provincial/state parks.
So here's where I started;
I wanted to use a '64-'66 ford pickup box. Its got the same bedsides and tailgate as an early bronco, its just wider. This gives me an 8 foot box and is way cheaper than using a bronco tub. Here is my concept;
So i picked up a '66 mercury box and narrowed it 8 3/4 inches in order to fit a bronco tailgate and hardtop.
Did some rust removal;
And then fitted the bronco tailgate;
Next came the tops, cut two in half and butted them together;
After dragging it inside, I began to screw around with the ride height and what it was going to take frame and axle wise to get it all to work. Mock up;
Frame built
Axle mounted. Axle is a 3500 lb with a 4" rise. I shortened it to 60" and added brakes while converting it to match the bronco's 5x5.5" bolt pattern. Tires are 35's.
So that's where I'm at. I have some more welding and rust issues to deal with while I have the box upside down in the garage. I'm working on sourcing a fresh water tank while the box is still off the frame. I'm having troubles finding something shallow enough. Anyways, you guys are the experts. I appreciate all guidance, suggestions and ideas along the way. That's why I'm here.
