Just run the T176 till it breaks - if it breaks. Some people can break parts pulling out of their garage, others have no issues ever.
What's wrong with the rear brake setup? If he followed the Zuki/Nissan rear brake thread on Pirate4x4 it should work fine. You might need to adjust the brake balance is all.
