Project "SILVER" an XJ Build

Been out of an XJ way too long! Finally found one here in NJ, that was not a rust bucket and didn't have 200K on the odo. So I present to you, project "SILVER" a mild XJ build for some trail use, lots of beach use, and some camping.

Project "SILVER" is a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited, 4.0L, Auto, NP242, D35/D30, 72K on the odo :Wow1:. This was a two owner truck, that was garage kept, and seams to be in decent shape. The usual rust spots in the doors are just starting to bubble, so I will have them treated and resprayed. Also might have a bit of heat-soak to deal with, I've only driven it a few times since bringing it home, so I have to look into that more. It's been in the garage getting detailed, and the weather here in NJ has not been great!

Step 1: Strip the interior! It was in OK shape, but needed a good cleaning. Removed seats, shampooed the carpet, cleaned and treated the leather seats, cleaned the windows and all plastic trim pieces. Also removed what was left of a old car mount cell phone system, complete with antenna and all on the rear window!

Step 2: Exterior. The exterior got a good clay bar treatment, plus a compound, and wax treatment. Came out pretty good for a 2001. Has some dings and parking lot scratches, previous owner used it as their winter "city" (Philadelphia) car. So it has the usual city dings! I may have them fixed when I get the rust sprayed.

Next up is I have to take a look at the electric power seats. Not all functions seam to be working. I"ll start by cleaning the connections with some CRC and taking a look at the switch as well.

So what's the plan you ask? Mild lift, 245 Duratracs on the stock 16" ICON wheels, misc skid plates, and some rocker protection. I want to add a roof basket to carry my hi-lift as well as a ARB awning, and misc. gear. I'll mount my ARB compressor someplace for air duties. I will either add a ARB or JCR front bumper or do a hidden winch in the factory bumper, (have to look at that a bit closer). Might make a small shelf in the rear with some storage and a place to mount my ARB fridge.

I'm sure there will be more!:safari-rig: This rig is basically a twin of Chris Shotz a long time member here with a sweet silver XJ. He would never sell it to me, so I found my own!

Only have one pic so far, as I said weather isn't nice here in NJ!

So I am debating lift kits. I am torn between a few of them. I have had a few XJ's in the past, and my past experience has been with a Rough Country kit that was OK. I didn't have it long enough to see how it was going to hold up. The other kit I have experience with is the Rubicon Express 3.5" Superride kit paired with OME shocks. Was a great kit, sat very high for a 3.5" kit, I ran 31's with both previous kits.

No pics of the Rough Country lift, but here is a pic of the RE kit with OME Shocks and 31's.

I've heard such great things about the OME kit, that I almost want to try that one. My local shop has been recommending the new MetalCloak kit, which apparently comes with some ARB OME parts.

Wouldn't mind getting some opinions on the following.

Jamie,

VERY cool! Nice specimen! I'm totally stoked to see what you do with it. :)

I'm not aware of a hidden winch system - that's not to say there isn't one out there, but I wouldn't bother. I prefer the OE look more than most, but trying to retain that bumper is impractical due to flimsiness and the ends hinder oversized tire compression - even 245s.

A nice, new JCR Crusader on the front would be elegant, functional, and compromise-free. If I was doing it again, I'd strongly consider this piece. (if you can get it without the hoops - I'm not a cosmetic hoops man)

You might want to consider Cooper Discoverer AT3 as an alternative to the Goodyear Duratrac. The Cooper is a wildly better tire in my opinion, with very confident off-road performance, and durability, but without the noise and discomfort that is associated with the Duratrac. If the Cooper suffers from anything, it's being a little boring to look at.

Your suspension selections all look pretty nice.

The system I ended up with on my Cherokee is Old Man Emu with 930 coils, N35/N36 shocks, and JC1B rear springs. This was fantastic for a Cherokee with little or no load, but was ultimately too light-duty for overland-centric off-roading. Furthermore, all of those part numbers, with the exception of the 930 coils, have been discontinued long ago. My experience with Old Man Emu on the Cherokee has been so overwhelmingly positive, that I'd hesitate to deviate from that brand if I was doing it again.

I've been eyeing OME 934 coils, with CS033RB rear springs, to try to bolster my payload support without greatly changing ride height. It looks like Metalcloak uses the CS033RB rear springs, judging by the picture, and I know that DPG knows how to put together a really nice XJ suspension, so you probably can't go wrong either way. I'm eager to see what you decide upon, because this is something that I'm still trying to get "just right".

Good luck!

Hope to see you on the trail soon!

I have the DPG super ultimate mega kit or whatever its called. Its nice. I ended up getting the upper arms and a few other pieces from Amazon. I have been thinking about getting the Metalcloak front springs to get rid of the spacer and have the dual rate springs. I haven't heard anything bad about the Metalcloak stuff.

There are a couple guys on NAXJA with a hidden winch and the stock bumper.

You can get the JCR without the tube work.

I would also like more info on the Bilstein claim. I have a silver xj as well. I used the 3" RC lift and have been pleased with it. I did not need a need track bar. Only ever had death wobble one time after I got an alignment. I ended up doing a dual steering stabilizer to help with bump steer. My next mod would be YJ brake lines on the rear for added piece of mind when flexing w/o the sway bar. Also a trans cooler and locker are on the list.

Doing some searching, found a few claims.

Jeep Forum- From a Vendor.
Edelbrock used to make the shocks for RE but they got out of the shock making business back a few years ago. So RE went to Bilstein and their shocks are now rebadged 5100 series. The part numbers for the RE shocks are the same as they used to be, except there's a "B" at the end of the part numbers now.

From Wrangler Forum:
The RE monotube's are bilstein 5100's that are setup specifically for the wrangler and the amount of travel is required for RE's lift. I have the RE monotubes and it has bilstein 5100 stamped in it.

If it's on the internet it must be true!:smiley_drive:
