Propane camp ovens

No experience but I know they sell them on Costco.com as well for a better warranty. The range is only rated at 5,300 btu per burner so you might need to bring another high power burner with you.

Dutch ovens are the way to fly, bake anthing we want in em.
I love dutch oven cooking. The problem is most of the summer we can't have any kind of open fire, not even charcoal. You even have to have a fire permit to use propane/gas stoves.

I know I had just read about one yesterday.
I have had my eye on them for awhile.

Finally after abut twenty minutes I found where I read it, a cooking forum.

I think I found the forum from here too.
Lots of good dutch oven stuff and more over there too.

Right now I use a propane cook stove, and a Foxhill oven that sits on one of the burners.

The Campchef thing looks very cool, and able to cook easier than my setup perhaps.

I am sure Amazon carries it too.
I would check the reviews on their site.

Dang, it is a nice unit, just not sure if I could squeeze it into the rig.

We may get one at Sportsman's warehouse tomorrow.
We're outfitting the new Tent Trailer.

Anybody have first hand experience with one of the portable propane camp ovens?

Camp Chef

Hi Rusty - I am about to try one of those - it's sitting in the carport ready to go, it's just been too windy to fire it up yet. I'll post soon on it.

We just launched a new column in Overland Journal called Overland Chef, and we're going to be covering bread baking soon.

I'm trying a couple of no-knead bread recipes this weekend if the wind stops!

I own one of the camp chef units. Picked it up in the cave at Cabela's for $100. We bought it mainly for emergency cooking, but took it camping this summer. The top cook burners are a little weak, but the oven worked great for us. We cooked monkey bread for 15 people and a batch of blueberry muffins. I need to get the adapter to a 20lb propane tank. The quality is a little wimpy, but it seemed to work fine.

I can't wait for this. I am going to finally be picking up a dutch oven and would love to find some bread recipes for it. Do you know if any of the no knead recipes will work in a dutch oven? I considered picking up one of these ovens, but I'm still young and in love with charcoal.

Hi Atticus - bread is much easier than you think, and Dutch ovens should be perfect for baking great bread. I love fires, too, when we can have them!

What I'm aiming for is easy-to-do-in-camp bread. So I'll test Dutch oven bread against the Camp Chef and Coleman ovens.

What got me going again on camp bread is how easy all the cooks on safari make it - for the last few years I've been lucky to work parttime in East Africa. Safari cooks turn out amazing bread using Dutch ovens or using regular baking tins (as many as 6-10 tins of bread) inside custom made metal boxes that are used just like the Dutch oven - coals are heaped on top. No fuss. Great fresh bread.

Since on our home safaris we don't have staff (!:p ), we have to be a bit more creative.

I can't wait. I will have to dig a fire pit in the backyard and start cooking dinner outside. At least if I mess it up at home I will have a pantry full of backup food.
