Propane campfire

I'm about ready just to pull trigger and try one. The owner/designer told me the 20" outputs 45,000-50,000 BTU's...but the base stays at or less than 100 degrees...he said you can set it on grass, fire it up and no worry about setting anything under the unit afire (that's why he was able to obtain the USFS approval/rating)...and at full output due to his patented burner design you'll get 21-hours out of a full size propane tank (20#).

that is pretty cool. so is this classified as a camp fire or a camp stove? Reason I ask is in Tahoe natl forest all camp fires are banned. only cook stoves are allowed with permit. Which just kind of ruins the camping experience in the evening. How will I be able to sleep without smelling of smoke?

Read this then maybe call Oliver for additional info...but based upon the article you should be exempt.

spressomon- how does the system pack up? Where do the logs ride and how does it keep all the pieces from flying all over the place?

I think he said he has a HD bag available for it...but I need to ask him. And the logs on the 12" and 20" are 1-piece design (whereas the larger patio size fire pits are made up of individual logs).

That makes sense to have a one piece log design. I could just see myself trying to assemble all the logs and pieces after a day of having the fire pit rolling around in the trailer! I wonder if the log is brittle or if it can take some hits? The HD bag is a must! Looks like a great way to go.

Might even be able to use one of those HD padded Dutch Oven zipper top bags for it...or at least fab one that would offer reasonable protection and relatively easy to sew or have sewn...

He did say the burner and ring are built to withstand tough abuse.

I too think it's crime that an open fire is not permitted but as most well know there are those who don't respect fire. I purchased a fire pit from Sportsman's Warehouse last year and used it on the North Rim, I was told no fire that makes sparks and the propane did not, the Rangers thought it was great.
For info anyone in Tucson wanting a propane fire pit should go to Sportsman's Warehouse as they have one out of the box at less than half price.

Making your own?

What would it take to make one yourself??? Those being sold at PortaFire are kinda pricey..

I've used a trusty washing machine tub for quite a while now. I've always toyed with the idea of modifying the tub somehow to burn propane. Of course, my idea was to utilize the propane to start a wood fire, not to simply run on propane the entire time - nearly all of my camping is in fire-safe locations - beaches, baja...

I'd also like the firepit to serve double-duty and use it as a propane powered barbeque....

Nothing depressing about this thread - in fact it is enlightening that there are other options. Being out east this might seem a bit fake. Out here in the west F-I-R-E is a four letter word - the amount of dryness and heat makes it quite dangerous to have any type of fire.

Gee now I have something for my video iPod too - thanks ;)
