Propane torch head? What do you use?

Snow Peak Gigapower torch

Bringing back an old thread. I just got the Snow Peak Gigapower torch so I could leave it in with my camping gear and not have to try and remember my MAPP gas torch when we load up.

I used it last night to start my charcoal for the BBQ and wow, it is a beast! Way quicker than my MAPP gas torch. The problem is the flame goes out really easy. I'm using a Jet Boil canister but if you tip it at too much of an angle the flame goes out and I have to restart it. Is this normal? Am I using the wrong fuel or did I get a defective unit? The package says you can use it upside down?

Any thoughts?

vary the distance to the charcoal and if your BBQ is to deep might not have enough air ?

I'm not sure I understand the need for a piezo / trigger ignite. A 3-flint welders striker is about 8 bucks, weighs about 4 ounces and is ultra reliable. Combine that with a tiny little manual torch and you're all set?

In the real world though, I rarely use propane. Just go for the acetylene!

For camping use... one less piece of gear to misplace with a built in ignition, and I can't use acetylene to run a stove or lantern.

Thanks Honu, I was hoping you would chime in. I tried it again last night not trying to light anything and it just goes out when I tip it too much. I'm a little bummed but I will try a different fuel source. If it still dies so easy I'll send it back. Amazon has a good return policy.

bummer
mine does go out sometimes for sure so it does happen but usually only once and usually when I place it to close to the source I am igniting :)
only used the SP canisters ? not sure that should cause it though :)

I bought the Jetboil canister this spring so I thought the fuel would be fresh. After checking the date last night I see it was made in 2013. Hmmm, now I'm wondering if it is the fuel. Anyone have an idea what the shelf life is of isobutane fuel? I'm going to try a new can regardless but it has me thinking.

I just use the piezo-electric start head, I think it's a Bernz-o-matic, but whatever, it came from Ace and it works. Since I use propane for my cookstove as well, it fits my multi-use criteria. When I am camping light, I use a pocket-rocket stove (isobutane) and typically will not have a fire as I cannot carry enough water for me and putting the fire out.

Thanks for your thoughts Stump; what have/could you actually repair with such a torch on the trail?

hole in a radiator for starters. carry a bit of solder and useful rods too. Also a handy tool for getting a frozen / stuck nut loose.

/and I'm mildly embarrassed to say that after decades of using camping propane bottles and a propane / mapp torch for plumbing and such, I only just recently realized I could use the torch head on the squat camping bottles. never occurred to me.
