Proposed 110 build - self contained for two with no RTT - possible?

Ok folks

I semi retire in December and will rebuild a D110 van body - galv chassis, replacement bulkhead 300tdi, yada yada.......... anyroadup, I would like it to be self contained for expedition travel, I'm not a fan of roof top tents, so wonder, would two people be able to travel cook sleep etc inside a 110 van body? This would mean being seriously creative with interior space, travelling light (not a bad thing) perhaps a pop up roof, has anyone managed it? Any photos/floor plans etc. Initial expedition would be round the coast of the UK (no I don't need a boat!!) then Morocco is on the cards........

Current thinking is-
1 An interior similar to VW camper with rock and roll type bed
2 Awning on one side
3 Roof rack for light weight stuff
4 Pop up roof (Dormobile??)....


Your thoughts/ideas appreciated...parking space rules out a D130

yes its posible, i had a 110 3door with a similare setup as u decribed.A full lenght bech seat that converted to a 7ft by 4ft 6 bed, plenty of storage space. Cooker ect. Only had chance to spend a few nights in it though but it worked well for me.

FMHE the landrover lends itself best to a side bed layout rather than the VW end bed setup . so the bed as mentioned prev post is a side bench that goes down into double (?) bed .
The other option is 1 bed at seat box top level and then the bench back hinges up to make upper bunk, this works best with dormobile type roof . In both these layouts the cooker , sink fridge etc is on the other side . Storage can be extebnded by cutting down into wheelboxes just behind front bulkhead . I made one into water storage , and other general storage .
Logistic wise a 109 or 110 is about max 2 person vehicle to stay within design GVW . But you do need to be real close friends :Wow1: A rear pull out type awning can be very handy esp when inclement weather . HTSH

Here's what I'd recommend:

Mobile Storage Systems style lockers throughout the load bed with a drawer unit at the back, modified so that its lid also opens. MoD 110 or Wolf side Jerry can lockers for carrying water, lubricants and some tools/spares. Engel fridge between the front seats. Water tank or tool box from a 109 or early 110 behind rear left wheel arch and under driver's seat. Floor safes under front foot well floors for valuables. Webasto or Eberspacher heater in engine bay if possible or under drivers seat if not. Twin batteries in standard location. Slim storage on sides of hard top and cargo nets along inside of roof (thermally lined). Make a 4" medium density foam matress to cover the entire load area lockers and wheel arch tops in several sections that can be removed for locker access and use outside the car for a sleeping area that will cater for two.

If I won the lottery tomorrow - my 110 tdi would be in a container bound for the attached shop in Germany. Well thought out equipment. I often look over his cabinets with an eye to putting together some of my own stuff. The new table they've designed that mounts under the doors would be a simple modification. With my lift and tires it would make the perfect dining table for my low camp chairs.

Make a 4" medium density foam matress to cover the entire load area lockers and wheel arch tops in several sections that can be removed for locker access and use outside the car for a sleeping area that will cater for two.

Sorry, that bit is unclear - make a thick mattress which covers the lockers and wheel arches, ie. the wole of the rear of the vehicle. Make it in sections so that you can easily access the lockers or use sections for sitting or laying outside (use some sort of water proof bagging for that).

My idea is a budget option for sleeping and carrying all kit internally. It won't really allow for comfortable inside cooking, washing and so on.

What type of campsites are you planning on using? (Carrying a small pop up tent may be a good idear so you can use tenting sites)
Are you looking at biulding your own storage system/bed or buying off the shelf products?

I have a '91 3 door x-MoD 110, and camp regularly in it with two (and once 3) people in the back.

I have 4 sections of .5 plywood that goes across the seat boxes topped with a 4" piece of foam. I use load straps to keep the boards tight. Under neath i have 4 large ammo boxes, with ropes attached so that i can pull them out. 1 box for food stuff, 1 for cooking gear, 1 for clothes and the other for misc. My cooler sits strapped down while travelling, and moved to the front while camping.

The side lockers hold extra fluids, recovery gear, air compressor etc.....

With 2 people (under 6') it is actually very comfortable....3 is quite snug, and probably wouldnt so it again...but it was me and two female friends so maybe.....:wings:

That truck from Red Rovers looks good, but I think the inside space could be a bit better utilised. However it gives a good reference. Making (I like to make as much as I can) the bed frame fold will be a challenge.............
The Red Rover truck is listed as a 1985 vintage......mmmmmmmm

1985...with a Puma Engine, body work....seems like stretching the rules a bit don't you think.:Wow1:

Beautiful truck, but you have to wonder for almost $50K...what are you getting? Even if you galvanized the original 27 year old chassis...I would want a serious independent specialist and the DMV to review this before I plunked down that kind of cash.

Now saying that...I do like the Doormobile concept, however I agree with a previous post that space could be way better utilized. Not a lot of storage for a camper??
