Pros & cons of air suspension.

A friend of mine blew out an air spring on a custom suspension system. Given his occupation it is very unlikely that the spring was under-rated for the job. They stuffed it with red rags to get home.

That an air spring can blow out is something that needs consideration, but I would not condemn them for all uses based solely on that. Leaf springs can also break, but no one banishes them from consideration.
It is just a matter of having worked out a repair or limp-home mode before hand.

I've only seen one ruptured airbag, and it wasn't the fault of the airbag. Though I've seen many a truck and trailer alike, with broken leaf springs. I would rather carry an extra airbag than a spare leaf. Also if the bag goes, your axle is still attached to the vehicle.
