Pulling my 1HZ Injection Pump, Injectors & more, ??'s

Hello All,
I have a 1994 75 series from Australia (now happy here in Phoenix, Arizona) that has 484,000 km's on it (275,000 miles)
The injector pump is leaking, I have no idea if the injectors have every been looked at but I get smoke at startup & climbing hills.
So since my wife is the office manager at a diesel engine shop and can call in lots of favors I am getting the pump & injectors rebuilt.
My thought is to also replace the timing belt & tension spring while I am there...what else? Injector pump oil seal behind the gear? Other bits?

Also is there anything I should know before I get started?

Thanks in advance

Just here...
This is probably going to be a good question to post up in the diesel section of Mud. Thats not a common motor here in the States. At least with the 3B, its all ND parts and can be had out of the warehouse in California. See if you can do the injector and pump rebuild, or at least help. I did the injectors myself under the watchful eye of a friend that is a diesel tech. It was actually pretty cool and I understand more about the motor now.

Mud is great for these types of questions, but if you haven't allready heard of it, you should look into LCOOL (Landcruiser owners online). It is an Aussie based forum that is like a really polite (really!) version of Expo for TLC owners. They started a US section but it never caught on. The 70 section (70scool) would be the place for more info than you could ever need. I am a longtime member of the 80s section and the guys I deal with there are great.

HI,

When i had my HZJ75 1995 troopy which i sold last year with 410000kms on it i would change timing belt, belt tenioner , cam seal, hoses, coolant and fan belts every 100000kms and then every 200000kms i would also change water pump and reco the altenator.
I have never changed the spring because it was always in the right length range which i cant not find the length for you at the moment.
Doing stuff like this was better to do it in your shed at home then in the middle of the outback.
1HZ engine is a great engine to work .
I hope this helps you.

great help on the forum hint and also thanks to PK for the tips on what to do.
I have the Factory Service Manual which tells about the spring length.
I didn't think about recon'ing the alt, good tip there.

I will be hanging out at the shop that is doing the injectors & pump as I have known the guy for years and want to watch the work & learn

Not wanting to hijack your thread but....

So you did get an Aussie TLC! Did you import it? Did you bring it in on a 1yr temp import? And if so shippng costs were?

Feel free to pm me insted of replying here if that suits you better. :)

1HZ Engine work

Lance,
Late to the party here but have a 1HZ and have worked on it a bit. My thoughts are:
Do the base line (air filter, fuel filter and injectors). They can all lead to smoke and are relatively cheap to rebuild/replace compared to other components.
Replace the cam shaft seal if you are going that far.
Rebuild the injector pump if it's leaking.
Replace timing belt, idler pulley and tension spring. If you're going that far might as well do the water pump, thermostat, top and bottom hoses. While the coolant system is drained, have your radiator checked. The top and bottom plastic bits tend to crack over time, easier to do while you've got it all torn down.
One big suggestion is to take the time to dyno tune after all fuel system maintenance. It will make a big difference in fuel economy and power output.
Cheers,
Pierre

Great suggestions Pierre and right along the lines of what I was thinking.
My local Toyota dealer has been able to source most of what I need and the rest is coming from Roodogs Spares.
The injector pump & injectors are being done locally as my wife works in the diesel industry and we are calling in all the favors we can :)

RMP, sorry for the delay in responding...I do have a diesel from Oz and someone else got it into the country :)
Az DMV was a breeze to sail through and it went through emission with no issues.

Few suggestions:

Make sure your IP pump is rebuilt with Vitron seals, opposed to rubber. If you ever plan on running WVO or Bio.

Stating the obvious, but change out your glow plugs at the same time and keep a few of the good ones as spares.

Good time to test compression when you're reinstalling your glow plugs.

Oh, and slap on a turbo.

stop making me think about the turbo :)
one of the reasons I bought this rig was to have the most dead simple, easy to fix, reliable rigs on the planet....I have read lots of post on the Oz & South Afr forums that the turbo does fine on the 1HZ but I think I will hold off as long as possible.

Great suggestions on the glow plugs, thanks

1HZ Reliability

Lance,
My two cents, if you are after reliability and simplicity don't add the turbo. These engines do ok with 6-8 psi boost but long term you have the potential of cracking a head once you add forced induction.
Cheers,
P

Agreed on that....I have done a couple of trips to Northern Az now that gives me some mountain climbs and while I do have to get into 3rd gear it isn't horrible and I am not a speed demon anyway so I think there will be no turbo in my future.
Plus it gives me an excuse to get a new turbo troopie when we get to Oz next year :)
