Pump cycle no key?

I went out to take a hike to day I drove about 30 miles and when I stopped the Rover and took out the key There was a nose form under the hood that sounded like a pump cycling. No key Rover off. I popped the hood to have a look around and it sounded like it was coming from the front of the motor or maybe around the radiator. after about two minutes it stopped. when I got back in the rover and turned the key it started again right before the 4.0 turned over. drover home fine and didn't do it when I stopped at home. anyone have any idea what that might have been? I driver the Rover about 80 miles round trip evey weekend to go climbing and its never done this before.

thanks

Fans will run after you shut it down if it is really hot (like this is a bad thing). Are you low on coolant?

Ill check the coolant that was my first thought. It was 98 in Austin yesterday. but then I was fine for the same driver home and the temp gauge never spiked.

thanks

would there be anything wrong with a auto store home flush kit?? I hand handle that just fine. I really don't want to have to pull the radiator.
