Purchasing an XK?

Lurking a while on the site to compare next buy possibilities for light to moderate off road duty, interior space important, upgrades possible down the trail and camping. I would still like to keep it DD just for the fun of it. I have a toss up between the Jeep XK and the Lexus GX 470. I'm intrigued by the XK, they never seemed to catch on. I see very few here in NJ. The question, there are numerous 2006 XKs on the market at good prices, most at 60K-70K miles. Are there mechanical issues to consider that would sway me to the 2001-2003 GX 470?

A quote from Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne on the XK:
That car was unfit for human consumption... We sold some, but I don't know why people bought them.

That being said I have a friend who has one to haul around her 4 kids, it has never given her an issue, and she loves it.

The hemi xk has issues with stalling out that Chrysler has never figured out and from sources at Chrysler there are 2 new recalls coming but for what they couldn't say.

In reply to all, thank you. I think Justincredibles' post and everyone else responding will have me starting the search for a 470.

We have had a 2007 Hemi Commander (XK) since new. 112k miles. Virtually flawless. MPG averages around 15-16. Have hit 19mpg on longer highway trips. Best automatic 4WD system I have ever used. QD-II (standard with the Hemi) gets you full lockers front and rear (auto - not selectable). We had a few minor issues with a leaky sensor and sticking rear caliper. Rear DS probably needs new u-joints now but they are not serviceable  . I have used it to tow campers and my tractor quite a bit. No regrets from this owner. We hauled a camper and the whole family from northeastern PA to Wyoming and back in 2010. Not a single hiccup.

Research your intended vehicle, no matter what it is, and drive them both. Make your decision based on your own observations, not the ones sourced on the internet (including mine).

BTW - Sergio was not even part of Chryco when they developed and sold the XK. The Commander actually sold rather well, but cannibalized sales of the GC, which had a substantially higher profit margin due to its maturity. The XK is essentially a stretched GC, so to say it was "unfit for human consumption" is a bit absurd. They use(d) the same suspension and driveline.
